Getting Bullied

Who likes getting bullied? WE DO! Broadway Bullies that is! After hearing they were playing a spontaneous show at the Library Square Pub after the hockey game we had to go check it out!

Upon arriving we heard the tunes of our friends Azimyth. I've played the Library Square Pub and I know the difficult balance they have to keep between a good listening level for those bar attendees who are just there for the game, and the good listening level for those who want to rock! Also with a limited P.A your amps can't go to high or risk burying the vocals. Azimyth played some good tunes. Getting more into it as their set progressed but I was slightly disheartened at the lack of movement and crowd participation. For having a group of dedicated fans up front and center I would have thought some more rocking out would happen but in a more uptight venue I can see why holding back might prove instinctive.

But the opposite with The Broadway Bullies. Gearing up for their show on Tuesday at the Roxy they didn't hold anything back this show and rocked the stage. Upon starting everyone was sitting down and somewhat disconnected but at the end of their set, they had everyone up and moving and really enjoying themselves! They brought the thunder as they blasted into their set. Nothing short of amazing with grooving rock, epic solos, fat bass, crunchy drums and gritty vocals to complete the sound. The whole band has a certain sense of swag and that just can't be topped. Angus and Christo were up to their usual shenanigans by bouncing their energetic performances off each other. Highlights of the night... multiple flying jump kicks by Angus, rocking Panama by Van Halen and breakdancing at the end of their set.

Always great to see more venues open up to live music and let local bands rock the stage!

Hard Rock Thrives In Vancouver

If I had any doubt that Vancouver's new rock venue wouldn't be a smash... I was inspired by Magnetized Productions show at Tunnel. Every friday the nightclub is transformed into a good old fashioned rock and roll venue!

First up was It's Criminal. After missing them at Joe's apartment with Versus The Nothing we made sure to get there early to see the band rip up the stage... literally. This hard rock band was true rock when they blasted their set loud and proud. Great musicians, well written songs, and catchy hooks really made for a great sound. Mix in an in-your-face frontman and you get a recipe for destruction. Rocking out so hard they knocked over mic stands with classic punk rock attitude. Riverview was up next, after setting up. For having a fairly simple set up it took them ages to get their gear up and going. Playing well, but also louder than any of the other bands. The frontman was strong stage presence but was vocally rough around the edges. We at Hammer Records love loud music as much as the next person, but being excessively loud for loud's sake is pushing it a bit. When the sound guy has to crank up the vocals to the point of feedback it means turn down the amps. Specially in a small venue where only so many people are up front. They played great but would like to see them at their next show. Check out their music HERE

Quartered has an amazing history and accomplishments. On tour constantly and having tracks on Rockband are only a couple of great things this band has done. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with them once in my old band Moniker and they blew my mind. Seeing them again after a year they still blow my mind. Great refined sound of a modern hard rock band. Elements of prog rock mixed in with metal to create a blend tastes which just flow into ones ears. Catchy hooks and sick riffs rekindled my love for Quartered as they blew away the crowd. Using boxes crafted to house lights to shoot up at them as they played they looked and sounded amazing. I could see Quartered rock a small venue, a theatre or even an arena and you would still get such an intimate feeling with such a personable band. Check out their music HERE good luck on your tour!

Once again skytrains wrecked a good crowd. People dispersed having to go catch the last skytrain home and by the time Inside It Failed took to the stage there were only a few dedicated fans left. But that didn't deter them from rocking the stage! All of them had great stage presence and I wish they had a bigger crowd. Great hard rock sound and working hard on spreading their name through the scene! Check them out HERE

And A Winner Steps Forward...

After 3 weeks of bands duking it out, the last 3 bands gave it their all to win the Cellar Launch Project. The top and only prize is recording a new single, web promotion, new photos and shows booked. Sounds pretty good!

Slow Wave Sega was up first playing the heaviest sound of the night. Slighty progressive yet melodic hard rock blasted from the speakers giving the night a good kick off. Super tight riffing along with distinct vocals. Reminds me a bit of a perfect circle but more commercial. Good stage movement but would have liked to see some more movement from the bassist. Great use of vocals having someone for harmonies and someone for heavier vocals, mixing of the tones really brought this band a step up from usual hard rock/metal bands. Also using melodies that are different than one would normally put overtop of such riffs, sometimes a fourth instead of using the standard 5th above the root. Check these guys out HERE

Wintercoast followed up with a 180 degree twist. Going from hard rock to alternative, boarding on folk. But after the first song they had won our hearts over. Such a personal feel with their music and everyone on stage looked like they were dancing their feet off. The front man had a grin on his face the entire set and the lead guitarist looked like he was in a trance. The female back up singer looked nervous at points but seemed to be enjoying herself. We had wished she had owned the stage a bit more, being a back up singer doesn't mean having to stay in the shadows or on the side. Movement is good! Grabbing the microphone off the stand and taking control shows your comfortable with the stage. The band functioned as a fantastic unit and really brought the songs to life. And turning the night on it's head again was Heavy Weight Water Buffalo. A mix of blues, funk, and jazz made everyone start dancing. An energetic sound full of life and energy their grooves were catchy and funky. The front woman commanded the stage with her voice and presence. The band behind her supported her perfectly by taking spotlight every now and then but leaving lots of room for her to sing her heart out. While great vocals, there were a lot of vocal runs and such which really brought it away from being commercial. Not that thats a bad thing, but just sounded more like something you'd see at the Yale (a packed show for sure), but not so much at the Commodore or Rogers arena. These guys were all talented musicians and just blew my mind with their skill! Great solos, harmonies, rhythms and feel. Rose and I even made our way up to dance to their last few tunes. No Facebook page for these guys but give them a search on google!

While everyone was dying to hear the winner of the Launch Project, lots of people were dying to see the special guest... Incura. Taking things a turn for the heavier, Incura proceeded to blow the crowds mind with their brand new tunes. A beautiful blend of heavy riffs and fantastic soft breaks really showing where Vancouver music can go after being honed in by talented musicians for years. Theres no wonder why Coalition Ent/Warner Music signed them, this is a band that all Vancouver bands should look up to. Brilliant front man with unique vocals + shredding vocally talented guitarist + ground shaking bassist + bombastic drummer + singing cinematic pianist = amazing band and brilliant music! Finally the winner was announced... The Day He Quit! Congratulations! Amazing band, be sure to check out our video of them posted below. Also check out their full music video and amazing tunes! Can't wait to see what this band does! A big thanks for the Cellar and all our fellow judges for the amazing time. Seeing bands battle it out is apparently in style and both Joe's Apartment and The Roxy will be doing their own versions so stay tuned.

We've Got A Screamer!

That quote from Cameron of Lift Off pretty much sums up the night! Two bands with big fan bases but very different sounds took the stage Tuesday night at The Roxy. Now I know if your watching something your not very excited about you might not be up front and centre or even on the floor watching, but I was saddened by a few discouraging shouts from the sitting crowd while Lift Off was on stage. If you don't want to participate in crowd participation then just stay silent instead of shouting out jeers and mocking comments. It was only a couple jerks in the crowd, most of the crowd was supportive and friendly!

Lift Off put on a show, no other way to say it. Brought extra lights, banners hanging on the wall, and a set crafted perfectly. They are gearing up for heading down south to Texas and I think if they played every show like they did Tuesday night then they will blow the audience away! Even though they have been featured on our page plenty of times, we only see them getting better and better. Crafting their set to be full of energy and crowd participation. Stand Down tore up the room on a different level. Tight heavy riffs, thundering bass and gritty vocals. A mix between Kyuss, Black Label Society and Tool. Frontman Ken Goode rocks that mic harder than Chris Brown hits women! Brilliant frontman, great movement and his whole essence just screams rocks. But a few too many great vocal moments lost from holding the microphone away or at an off angle. In the recordings the vocals are up front and centre and his tone just blows my mind, but live they were a little to buried under the guitar and bass. Running through a vocal processor is a great idea, adding harmonies or effects to really take the vocals to a whole new level, but once again was lost in the mix. The guitar was tight and great movement, really laid down the feeling of the tracks. The bass was thunderous for such a small amp, a couple problems early on but him and his dreadlocks made the stage shake with his low end riffs. The drums were tight and monstrous and keep the tracks moving forward as well as laying it back in halftime feels for choruses and bridges. The band was super tight with each other and made for a great show. Check them out HERE

Rocking Younger Minds

Hammer Records loves supporting the scene as much as we can and love seeing younger bands emerging! Rekindling our memories of in the basement with our friends dreaming of rocking huge arenas and stadiums. But for some of these bands it could be a reality, and with veterans Sharks! On Fire!

Goodnight Grace was rocking their set as we entered Tom Lee Music hall to a refreshingly large crowd of eager youngsters. With impressive skills on their instruments and amazing stage presence they looked like they were having the time of their lives. At times the vocals were pitchy or a little weak but I'm sure some lessons and years will craft it to a hard rock voice of the gods. They played the song they did their music video with, but we thought they could have picked a better single for their video frankly. The song following had much more dynamics, melodic vocals and catchier hooks. With some production and direction their album could be a great hit! Be sure to check them out on Facebook HERE

Solitary Silence was up next. This was an interesting experience. The guitarist and drummer were totally into it and rocking it up. But the bassist and second guitarist just weren't selling it to us. This kind of music needs super enthusiastic energetic. Also the vocals were very rough and not as melodic as the demos made us believe. Good music but just need to work on their live show. After Our Juliet set up and without any real announcement started their set with a flanger heavy guitar riff. Seeming quite loose around the edges at the beginning of their set leading up to an actual "what-are-we-doing-now?" moment in their set after loosing track of their structure. Metal riffs, thrash riffs with melodic vocals and screamo created the sound of After Our Juliet. Great movement from the two frontmen, a kind of Ying and Yang essence between the hardcore screams and the soft melodic vocals. Nice improvisation when the guitarist broke a string and had to find a new guitar, they broke out into an random song to fill time. The bassist while playing fairly complex riffs didn't seem to move more than 5 steps the entire show. Would have liked to see him match the energy from the rest of the band. Near the end they seemed to be getting more into their groove, definitely would like to check them out at a later show! Check out their tunes HERE

Sharks! On Fire! are no strangers to the stage. Having even putting on their own music festival up in Kamloops these giants in the Vancouver music scene and are a great role model for all bands. Such an energetic and friendly band on and off stage. Their songs are always catchy and full of "rock-your-face-off" moments! Synth leads and thumping drums carve the hole for the thick bass and crunchy guitar. And the vocals sit perfectly on top of the carefully crafted sound. S!OF! Can play any stage, big or small, they will dominate it. This night was no exception, whipping the crowd into a sea of jumping arms and smiling faces. Cellar Launch Party Week 3

The third week of the Cellar Launch Project has come and gone, and again there were some great acts. It also happened to be my birthday! Lift Off was due to perform, but had to unfortunately cancel. If anyone was looking forward to seeing them perform before they tour to Texas this March, you can catch them on the 28th at The Roxy for the Fox band of the month performance.

The first act of the night were the Whethermen. They had great melodies and a very full instrumental sound, though they didn't draw much of a crowd that night. I can see this 3 piece Blues-Rock group becoming very successful amongst an older crowd. I imagine them playing bars like the Yale, casinos, weddings, and even house parties. The Whethermen had very personable stage presences, and good movement - it seemed like they've been at it for years! They're catchy tunes are perfect for dancing, and singing along to. Silent spring was next up. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from these fellas, having not heard them before, but they have a great rocky sound. With use of both electric and semi-acoustic guitars, fat bass runs, and heavy-hitting drums, I'd say they had a very dynamic sound that engulfed the entire room. I wish I could've seen a little more movement from the band, as well as from the crowd. With such a strong, and unique stage presence it's sometimes hard to fill a club like The Cellar versus something more "Stadium-like." For these guys, it's just GETTING there. They've got the talent, the stage personas, and even a manager. A few more performances out in the scene and I think they can really get somewhere! Leave the Lion was the final act of the night. They had great movement and stage presence, though more eye contact from the lead singer would be an asset to their set. The drums were loud, in all the right ways, the bass lines were very recognizable through the guitars tight riffs, and the vocals were engaging and compelling. Cellar Launch Party Week 2

The party continues with 3 new bands hitting the stage last wednesday night! This week it was Gypsy Ray, Oh Village and Japanese Girls. We had never heard of any of them before so had no clue what was going to come of that night and we were pleasantly surprised!

Gyspy Ray opened the night up with some cross between ska, reggae and rock. Now I know being first is always nerve racking and when your in front of a panel and judges it doesn't make it any easier. But while playing well they seemed nervous. The guitarist made a couple mistake during the first song but nothing huge, no train wrecks. The vocalist had a unique voice, lots of natural vibrato and power behind his voice but it seemed more often he ended his phrase with vibrato which become a little tiring on the ears after a while. His stage presence was great and nice melodies over the instruments and great movement and personality. The bassist was grooving along but looked nervous and didn't make a lot of connection with the crowd or judges, same with the guitarist. We always say, play loud and proud! Better to make a couple mistake but rocking out on stage than being conservative. We definitely would like to check them out at another show and I could see them flourishing with a larger crowd, very dance and groove friendly music! Oh Village followed up and was interesting seeing them set up. Keys, drums, Cello, Trumpet, Guitar, and Bass... yet only four people, instantly grabbed my attention wondering what kind of a sound would come from such a set up. After their first song I was blown away. Their vocalist reminded me of the singer from Beruit, a beautiful soulful voice with such power and dynamics it was like wine! This Abbotsford band had such a unique sound, a blend of folk, rock, alternative. Think Radio Head, mixed with Coldplay, and then taken and turned indie. Amazing musicians, each of them masters of their weapon of choice and as the set progressed their showed their versatility when the guitarist switched to cello and the bassist switched to trumpet. Every switch never drew away from the sound, but adding a unique twist to the track. All while playing around tempos, time signatures changes and key changes. Very personable they talked with their audience, great eye contact, and their energy just filled the room. Below is a track of the night and go check them out on Facebook HERE

The last band of the night was Japanese Girls, now these 3 lads were anything but fair skinned asian ladies, but captured the audience all the same! Now being the only straight up rock band of the night they were a little amiss but did let that stop their alternative sounding rock'n'roll from lasting loud and proud! Reminding me of the Arctic Monkeys and a couple UK bands their front man dominated the stage. A loose around the edges band with catchy chorus and a slight punk edge to them. The whole band looked like they were having a blast and it translated to their music. We will definitely keep our eyes on them. Karaoke Will Never Be The Same Again!

Hammer Records went to its very first Hip Hop Karaoke at Fortune Soundclub! What an amazing experience! Opening up with a DJ spinning some tracks then the host brought up people who had signed up to rap their favorite tracks! It was a lot like any other Karaoke but this night had a special trick up its sleeve! Panther And The Supafly was in the house and after a few MCs they came up on stage and played backing tracks LIVE!

The crowd was huge! This night had been going on for almost 3 years so the crowd was very supportive and cheered for every person that got up and had the courage to rap. Seeing the band play the tracks was great. Such great grooves, riffs and made it such a unique experience. Panther and The Supafly then proceeded to play their own set which blew the lid off the venue! A couple new songs as well as some good old favourites! We will definitely be going back for the next one! possibly bringing Hammer Records artists to sign up!

Roxy and I are out almost nightly trying to go see new bands, old bands, new venues, fundraisers, open mics and everything to do with Vancouver music. Tonight we hit two venues, Mad Hatters, a new underground venue, as well as Tunnel Nightclub for a new Friday live music night. Saw some old friends and a sick sounding band!

Mad Hatters is located near Main St sky train station. But just out of the way enough that it takes a fan of the bands to go venture to this location. It took us 20 minutes to find the place but after seeing the bouncer outside smoking we finally climbed the stairs to see what was in store. Stoned Moses was already well into their set and the whole room was dancing and jiving. Instead of the conventional way of going down a set list, Stoned Moses just jams and plays what ever pops into their head at the moment, and if it leads into one of their super catchy songs then so be it!

So after leaving we rushed over to Tunnel Nightclub, which has givens Fridays over to Magnetized Productions who started Friday Rock! This is vital to Vancouver. Please go check it out one Friday night! Go support local music! Go see a new band, go just for the heck of it! and with 9.95 for TWO Canadian beers... can't go wrong! Tonight it was Azimyth and Stealing Eden. The Headliner Ten Ways had to back out due to injury, but it was a great night none the less! We just caught the end of Stealing Eden and was blown away. Super tight professional sounding, great stage presence, amazing voice, shredding guitar, pounding bass, phat drums... classic modern rock.

Also to top it all off was an amazing cover band after Stealing Eden! Under The Covers plays modern, hard, and classic rock to end the night on a pleasing note! No top 40 here!

Great night for us! But go forth and conqueror! Go see new music, and if your at a show with your favorite band... show some enthusiasm! go nuts! dance, headbang, do what you will but do it loud and proud! Just a little rant from me!

CELLAR Launch Project - show one!

The Cellar nightclub on downtown Vancouver's Granville strip is hosting another "Cellar Launch Project," and Hammer and I have the pleasure of being on the judging panel alongside other amazing industry professionals including: Chloe from Artropolis.ca, Ryan from Rednyne Productions, and Mr. Rockstar himself, Jordan Carriere (Static In The Stars) from Beatlab Studios! The competition will be held on Wednesdays throughout the month of February; the next dates are the 15th, 22nd (my birthday!), and 29th!

The first show was held just yesterday, the 8th of February. On the bill for the night were Exer, The Day He Quit, and Bridges Out!

"Exer" was first up - and the pressure was on! It's tough being the first contestant up in a competition, but these guys held tight and rocked through their set. They had interesting sound, sort of an Urban Metallica. The drums were nice and heavy hitting, and the the guitars/bass flowed together nicely, though it would have been cool to hear some more melodic solos coming from the lead guitarist. The use of three vocalists really gave them a distinct sound, and was very cool to see on stage. Would have liked to see a little more movement from these guys, though they carried themselves greatly and with confidence. Their last song of the night was definitely the favorite from their set list. Unfortunately, we are unable to find a social media presence for these guys - so if you want to check their sound, click play on the teaser video below (Up Shortly)!

The second band up was "The Day He Quit," and let's hope not a single one of them do! These guys ROCKED, and rocked hard! It was fantastic to see such a following for this Vancouver Island band out on a Wednesday night, but once they started, I knew why! TDHQ had great movement and stage presence, let alone their radical Rock tunes! The vocals were so on-point it rendered me speechless!, the bass was distinct and fat, the guitars were played expertly, and were very melodic and pleasing to hear, and the drums were super heavy and had fantastic timing - creating some super cool beats! Add in the very personable transitions between songs and you've got yourself a show! I can't reveal any points rewarded, but I hope to see these guys go far! The final band of the night have been featured on our site before, and are constantly played through our stereos here in 'Hammer Land'! "Bridges OUT" is a 6-piece post-hardcore/screamo/progressive band in the Vancouver scene. This band knows how to play each instrument to the best of their abilities, and create a unique yet very marketable sound. The use of synth/keys throughout, and between songs created a very clever way to introduce the next number. Bridges OUT uses amazing song structures, and catchy lyrics to draw their fans to the floor - and despite the lack of pre-sale tickets, they had a good group of people headbanging or grooving to the music. Some more movement from the second guitarist and bass player would have been nice, but other than that - an amazing set! Best of luck to you in the competition! Hope you go far! Lost Girls OF Neverland -A Vancouver Musical

Come Down Into Our Cellar...

Are YOU ready for some Sonic Rock?!

Last night Hammer and I took a drive down one of Vancouver's most active live-music venues, The Railway Club. On the bill for the night was The Stolen Organ Family Band, Earthbound George, Amusia, and The Niche. Due to other work earlier in the night, we could only catch the last two acts, we apologize!

Upon entering the club, Amusia had just finished setting up, and launched into their first song of the set. (Great timing I'd say!) The first thing I noticed was their overall sound. It was very chill, though at the same time very dance-able. The whole band seemed to be having a blast on stage in their own ways. I found the vocals to be very marketable sounding - meaning he had great pitch and tone, and knew how to deliver his lines clearly and passionately. You could tell there was a lot of heart behind the lyrics. The bass riffs were fat and you could really hear the runs pounding through the speakers. It's all too ofter we'll go to shows, or listen to an album, and you can't distinctly hear the bass. Amusia really knew how to deliver though. The guitar riffs simply kicked ass. They were tight, and were leveled perfectly with the rest of the band. Though we would have liked to hear the distortion channel a little louder than the clean one. It lacked a little bit of a punch due to just volume. The small use of spacey synths added a really cool electronic vibe to some of their tunes. There was one instrument that really stood out to me though, and that would be the drums! Whether it was the tone of the kit, the way it was mic'd, or just the sheer talent of the drummer - they sounded amazing. The kick and snare really stood out, which was absolutely perfect for their Rock sound.

Over all, great show, and would love to check them out again sometime. They'll be playing The Cellar in downtown Vancouver (on the Granville strip) on February 10th, where they're releasing their brand new full album. Gabriel Savage (lead singer) from The Niche, was the one to invite us out the to the show Friday night, and man did they ever know how to put on one! These guys (and gal!) knew how to rock the stage. The performance alone was very dynamic and entertaining, and the music was catchy and fun. There were definitely a lot of people up on the dance floor grooving to their Rock, meets Bluesy-Jazz-almost Latin Funk style that they like to call "Sonic Rock." In the beginning of the set there were some guitar troubles, though once switched out for a second guitar - Ryley Kirkpatrick (Lead/Rhythm Guitar) jumped into some intricate riffing, followed by some smooth rhythm playing. He certainly made it look like he was having the time of his life on stage! The bass was nice and thick, though we would have liked to see Chris Seversen move around a little more to add to the overall stage presence of the band. The drums were hard hitting, and very pleasing on the ears at the same time. You could tell drummer Mario Beer (wicked last name!) has some talent! During a song he jumped into the crowd, cowbell in hand, and commenced playing it before passing it off to an audience member for the remainder of the song. We love to see bands break the fourth wall and react with, and jump into the crowd. It's a fun a way to really connect to your fans. Kaylar Chan filled out the rest of the sound with some interestingly placed keys and sax. She really added a neat effect to the overall sound. A well placed sax can make almost anything sound good, or better if already good! And last, but certainly not least, was Gabriel Savage's vocals. This guy really knows how to move on stage, while still carrying out sick melodies and keeping on pitch for most of the show. The thing I love most about this genre of music is that it's meant not to sound perfect.

Have You Been Dodging Daylight?

From the moment you put the album into your speaker you get the sense of doom. Darkness surrounds your vision as you enter the world of Dodging Daylight.

The intro track "The Condemned" brings your right into the mental asylum that is "For Your Health". Dark brooding tones with some slow sludgy riff in the background set the groundwork as disturbed vocals fill your ears. Drums pound in the background sparingly. Hinting at the madness to come.

"Hate For The Weak" is the first vocals to fill your ears as the opening riffs rips into your skull. Super tight drums matching the guitar perfectly, then switching to half the speed for the verse riff. Gut wrenching screams and vocals fall over the track. Catchy guitar lead on the chorus allows great definition between structures points of the song. Pretty straightforward structure for the first track. A good introduction into the band and their sound. When suddenly halfway through the track it takes a turn in a different direction. Taking on new flavour this tasty riff switches the downbeat and adds a swing for a few bars before it launches back into the opening riff. Then a simple verse, pre-chorus chorus takes it till the end. Once again, a great introduction to the band and their sound for this album.

"Confined" carries on where the last track left off. More super tight chugging riffs with equally tight drums. The bass just fills out the sound, nothing really distinct from it but the low pounding riffs that fill out the edgy guitar sounds. Some impressive drum rolls but other than that it more or less follows the guitar's riffs. As being the shortest track on their album nothing in this song stood out for me. Great song to head bang too with its low droning riffs. Near the end of the track there seems to be a lead going on in background but its buried beneath everything you can barely hear it. Would have liked to have it stand out a bit more.

"Do Or Die" is one of my favourite tracks on their album. Definitely the single of the album if I had a say in it. From the super catchy opening riff to the great structure of the song. Using all the techniques the band showed in the previous songs they formed them into the perfect beast. Different type of vocals, a more produced melodic tone than the last but really made the track what it is. The driving snare really keeps up the tempo and drives the song along. Easily could hear this on the radio. Great track!

Getting back to the face melting "Seeking Clarity" reminds me of an early Trivium track. pounding palm muting, ever growing expanding riffs with nice use of expanded chords in areas giving more depth to just the standard metal riffs. This track does not stop for anyone and just keeps you head banging till the end.

The Final track "No Home" has the most melodic riffs so far in this album. Perfectly complimenting the growling screams and break neck speed picking riffs dotted through out the song. My 2nd favourite track on the album because I could easily see this being played in GM place opening up for Lamb Of God, Megadeth, Trivium and really getting the crowd moshing. Perfect bridge riffs which bring in a slightly different feel and different higher screaming. The ending riff is exactly what this album needed to close on, just a continued heavy dissonant riff which fades away as if your losing consciousness, and to add to that effect a pounding heart beat enters your ear. Just leaving you wanting to play the whole album again.

The album as a hole has a great feel to it, great mixing, super tight instrumentals, screaming vocals all blended together to become a sick metal album. Well produced sound that hints at the greatness to come, these guys put on a great show, lots of energy and spunk. Go head bang to them live to really get a sense at what they are all about. Hey all you music lovers! Sorry for the lack of content in the last couple of months. We here at Hammer Records have been pushing higher and higher and working harder to bring you bigger and better stuff!

First off we have a new website coming! www.hammerrecords.ca will be official sometime mid January. This will include a list of all our services along with samples. Will also showcase our artists signed under our label. We will be unveiling their names and music soon enough. All 3 are currently in preproduciton for albums to be recorded later this January. Music and live shows coming soon!

Also, music video for Albion Morina for his single "Love Me". Filming commences the first two weekends of January.

Along with that our usual album reviews, live photos, live videos are all coming as fast as we can work on them! Working with a published Author doing an audio book for his book "Don't Read This, Unless You Want More Money!" So lots of things are in the works!

NERDFEST 2011

Not a lot of people really know what goes on at an event like Nerd Fest... So we’re here to tell you! It’s a night of sword play, LARPing, Costumes (think Knights, Centurions, Wizards, Wenches, etc), chain mail clothing, epic videos (like the release of Scythia’s first music video done by… US!), and of course great music! On the bill for the night were Celestial Ruin, Eye of Odin, and Scythia.

Celestial Ruin got the night started with their very Kamelot meets Nightwish with hints of Evanescence sound. The female fronted band definitely had a lot of confidence in what they do, and it showed in their music. The tunes were catchy, and sound great on an album, but they are hard to pull off perfectly live without the use of backing tracks. Would have liked to see more movement and interaction on stage, and we couldn’t see the keyboard player at all, but with some more practice I think the next show will be fantastic! Keep your eyes and ears out for these guys and gal!

Eye of Odin took the stage next. These fellows had great tunes, and a very interesting sound. Each song was nice and full, though the vocals seemed to be buried a little underneath everything. On that note – there was great use of backing harmonies and vocals. Each member had great stage presence, and awesome costumes, though it was the front man who really captured everyone’s attention. He doubled as the host for the evening, and has a very cool theatrical speaking voice. Over all, great show, great costumes; can’t wait for the next one!!

The final musical act of the night was none other than Hammer favourites – Scythia! Having just completed, and released, their first ever music video, these guys and gals were ready to take the stage by storm. They sounded absolutely amazing. The best we’ve seen them play yet. All 5 members had HUGE stage presence, and always looked like they were having the time of their lives. They were directly communicative with the audience, who seemed to know the folk-metal band’s music well and were even shouting out requests! Scythia played both new and old – including a medley of video game theme songs including the brand new Skyrim. The drums were grand AND epic, the bass low and bite-y, the guitar crisp and huge, the oboe sat nicely on top of the mix, and the keys filled everything out perfectly. Then, of course, was lead singer, Dave Khan’s roar that powered over all! If you’re into metal, or folk, or folk metal you should definitely check these guys out however you can!

All in all, the night was spectacular. Hammer and I had a lot of fun, rocked out to great music, learned a few things about sword play and stage combat, and got our Nerd on.

A Starlight Spectacle

October 30^th, 2011 shall always be a night to remember for us at Hammer Records! Hammer, a friend of ours, and I traveled down to Joseph Richard Nightclub on Granville for the Judas Priest/ Lady Starlight after party, courtesy of our friends, and my favourite local band, Cruel Young Heart, who played a fantastic set that night. It was an evening of many acts and interesting spectacles. There was a solo singer, a drag performance, a fashion show, painters, two bands, and Lady Starlight herself spinning later in the night.

The first two acts were kept short with one song each. I didn’t catch the names of either performer, but they both had a lot of stage presence and confidence, let alone vocal talent.

Next up was, none other than, CRUEL YOUNG HEART! They started off their set with their single, Nighttime Glow – which got the crowd of bystanders moving their hips to the catchy tune. They played another song, and then invited Kaylee Johnston, a very talented vocalist, up on stage for a cover of a Scissor Sisters’ song. It was a very cool twist to their set list! After another song, they announced they’d be right back, and sure enough, came back a few minutes later sporting new flashy costumes, and epic sunglasses! The rest of their set sounded tight, they worked the stage like true professionals, and pleased everyone in the venue. Keep your eyes and ears out for these guys – they’re going far! As the next band was setting up, a fashion show took place! The line was by Tush Designs, made for Lady Starlight & GaGa by Roberta Cheema. The show was put together by Nancy Perreault, with help from Harriet Vianello and her make-up team Moaning Lisa Larinnie and Dani Barnes. Very cool and creative designs! I would certainly sport those given the chance.

I, Braineater then took the stage! This band had a very well put together sound, and tons of energy! The front man really knew how to work the stage, surrounding area, and the crowd! At one point he came over to where Lady Starlight, our friend Alex, and I were rocking out together, and pulled Lady Starlight close, and they rocked out like old friends. It was a very cool sight! Over all they had a really great sound and very out-of-this-world stage presence.

The last spectacle of the night was Lady Gaga’s best friend, Lady Starlight, spinning! Having chatted with her earlier in the night for a while, and a few times throughout the evening, we got to know she’s a really cool chick, and really easy to talk to! Seeing her up on the turntables was quite an honour. She has an amazing personality, and a lot of talent! If you can, check her out on tour with Judas Priest, or on stage with Lady Gaga!

As I said above, this was definitely a night to remember for us! Great people, great performances, great music. A lot of new connections were made, and old ones made stronger.

Masquerade Ball

Halloween is always a busy time downtown. Everyone dressed up trying to get into the cheapest club or wandering the streets seeing everyone in costume. But some people decide to break the rules and do something... extraordinary.

There is always theme events on Granville but having a masquerade ball just sounds elegant. To start off the night was Whiskey Jack. True to their name, there sound was true rock and roll. A dynamic three piece of Batman, Dracula, and.. something! It was nice to see some movement and interaction between the members But it would have been nice to see the band try and interact with the crowd a little more. I know its hard with a small crowd but maybe move away from the mic stand and rock around the stage. Some nice tunes, great bass lines. And the drummer was singing with a headset microphone. Very cool to see. Would like to hear the album or a music video to see this band shine!

The Shrugs have been featured on Hammer Records a few times and they always deliver. A very dynamic band with a strong stage presence. After seeing them over and over I feel like they just are waiting for a spark or something to take them to the next level. Always writing new songs and evolving their sound but I want to see them take their stage show to something more. Halloween allowed them all to zombize themselves but it would be great to see them do something over the top for shows. Take it a step up and do something crazy! Great band, be sure to watch out for their new music video coming out soon!

Lift Off is a good example of taking things up a notch. Renting a bus to bring their crowd to the show, bring their own strobe lights and fog machines, As well as huge banners. Now allowing the visual aspect match the ferocity of the music aspect it brought the whole show to a climax. The crowd was packed as they rocked through there set. Everyone was grooving and dancing to their fantastic tunes. This band is on the fast track to the top of the scene and we are proud to support them! If you haven't already checked them out then carve time into your schedule too. They have a new music video coming out soon!

Turned out to be an amazing Halloween! Continue supporting the scene!

Firewind Is The Brutalist Of Wind

When I heard Firewind was coming to town I grabbed the phone and dialled their management as soon as I could. I was determined to see these Greek Gods tear it up on one of my favourite Vancouver venues.

The Joint Chiefs started off the night with their brand of metal. These are local campbell river band that gave it their all. Their sound was very raw and ragged. Reminds me of a super young Slayer. Lots of headbanging, jumping around stage and crazy antics, but not the strongest songs. After a few songs each riff seemed to blend into each other. Would have liked to see a little more dynamics with songs or maybe a little different instrumentation. I would imagine their album sounds tight, but live just needs a little more work.

Nightrage roared onto the stage and took things up a notch or two. More melodic metal than the previous band with very tight riffs. Structured metal where I could recognize the chorus nicely. Screaming vocals pierced nicely through the duel guitar onslaught. The bass filled up the bottom end nicely, his lines just complimenting the guitar lines. Super tight drums, but thats to be expected from Firewind's drummer, Johan Nunez. This reminded me of some of the best metal bands in Vancouver, great band but not mind blowing.

Taking things up about 10 notches the next band just ripped onto the stage. First thing i noticed was such a strong bass presence. Amazing lines that really drove and set the mood for the songs. Mix that in with the driving drums, riffing guitars, and soaring vocals you get White Wizzard. If Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had a baby then this band would be its offspring. Amazing stage presence, a true touring band. This band got the crowd roaring and cheering. Catch choruses and a very over the top feel overall to the band. Can't wait to see them back in town!

Holy shredding guitar batman! Killer riffs, this band just whipped the crowd into a moshing frenzy. Their bass player was a madman as he leaped around the stage headbanging like no tomorrow. Arsis definitely had their craft down. Not as melodic as White Wizzard but their ferocity made up for it in spades. This band just give it their all. Their fingers were like lightening up and down the fretboards. The vocalist roared until I thought his voice would give out. The drums just blew my mind. His kicks were like a machine gun blasting out of the speakers. So dynamic yet so precise. Amazing.

Firewind just blew everyone away though, as expected. A professional band that has been around for years and it shows. They showed professionalism and a level of stage presence that kept the crowd cheering the whole set. Gus G, who now is also touring as Ozzy's guitarist, just was amazing. I love firewind's albums and to see them live was a treat and will never be forgot. Sadly we weren't allowed to take pictures or videos, but they will live within our minds forever.

When Great Minds and Great Tunes Come Together

October the 20th was Music Industry Showcase Night at Joe's Apartment on the Granville Street strip downtown Vancouver. The night consisted of a bunch of great minds all under one roof! There were record labels, promoters, sound engineers, radio stations, photographers, and artists. The night also featured 3 singer/songwriters, and FOUR bands. That's a lot of acts! Though certainly a great time.

First up was host for the night, Lee Lindsay. She had a three song set that started to draw in the crowd. Her voice was soft yet powerful, and her lyrics came straight from the heart. It was a great start to the night.

Next was a fellow who'd travelled all the way from the UK. Personally, I love their musical style. It's quite different than the singer/songwriters of North America. He had a unique ton, and lots of vocal theatrics. He also really knew how to demand attention with use of stomping, and knocking on his guitar, not to mention that grand vocal style! Definitely loved his set.

Third up was Mark Alexandrie. This man has an amazing voice, guitar skills, and his lyrics are passionate and straight forward. Though, somehow poetic all at the same time. He had a great presence on stage, and seemed to have quite a following amongst the crowd. Overall, loved his style.

The next band, Marc Alexandre (?), had a lot of spunk. Their songs were catchy and fun, and the instruments sounded very on point. They had great stage presence, though the female vocalist/tamborine player looked bored a lot of the time.

The Broadway Bullies took the stage next, and they took it by storm! Honestly, they stole the show. I'd never seen them perform before, and I was blown away. The amount of energy coming from that stage itself was incredible, let alone the whole instrumental sound which was on point and fantastic. Every member moved around that stage, though it was the singer that really captured attention. He was constantly moving, jumping, and dancing the entire set. He had a very old school vibe to him. Think, a rock n' roll version of Link Larkin from Hairspray. They have a great image, and even better songs. Definitely make sure to check them out on FACEBOOK.

A Hammer Records favourite, Lift Off, took the stage. Their light show alone was incredible! These fellas always put on a great performance and wow every crowd. Their Green Day-esque sound got the crowd moving and shaking, and I believe EVERYONE was having a blast. They will be back at Joe's with bands Whisky Jack and The Shrugs on Saturday October 29th for a huge masquerade ball. Make sure to come check it out.. Hammer and I will be hosting the Lift Off tour bus! Check out the event HERE, and get your tickets ASAP!

The final act for the night was a band called Quickness. Now, those who visit Joe's Apartment a lot may have recognized lead singer, Jacob Dryden... That's because he's one of the resident sound guys at the venue! Though that night, he got to see the other side! His band has a very tight sound, and work really nicely together. I would have liked to see a little more movement on stage, but over all they had a very cool aura, and lots of musical talent! Check them out HERE.

It was a fun evening with lots of fantastic tunes, and tons of mingling with like-minds. We're looking forward to another one of these nights in the future.

Tom Morello livens up Occupy Vancouver

Hammer and I were sad to have missed one of Hammer's biggest influences, Tom Morello, when he came through Vancouver last week; but were lucky enough to have our good friend Uri "Drum Skank" Soomer cover the event for us!

Living Guitar Legend/Renegade Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Street Sweeper Social Club, and now his one man show “The Nightwatchman” made an appearance in Van City, Wednesday October 19th, to support our pursuit of happiness in the ongoing Occupy movement. I went down to the Vancouver Art Gallery with the intention of listening to the man speak and maybe play a couple songs. He showed up and indeed had a few positive words to say:

“This is a movement that is different from other movements”

“This is a movement that has correctly identified the bad guys,”

“This is a movement that has correctly identified the 99 per cent that are the righteous.”

“History is not made by presidents or popes, or kings or queens or generals, or CIA kingpins running dope,” he went on, quoting from Black Spartacus Heart Attack Machine, the opening track of his solo album "World Wide Rebel Songs."

“History is not made by nine robed men, or billionaires or bankers, it’s not made by them. Now they might throw a little money around, wondering who can be bought. Some might find they’re weaker, some stronger than they thought. Well we’ll stand right here, in our country, in our home. I used to think that I was alone, well….. I ain’t alone no more.”

After this was all said, Morello told everyone standing there that he was planning on playing a couple songs for us all standing in the rain… but that he had a better idea in mind. He asked everyone to line up in an orderly fashion at one of the many tents erected at the Art Gallery to score free tickets to his concert that night at the Vogue Theatre. The smiles just kept coming. After he left the stage, I promptly stood in said line and took my free ticket for the ride. Everybody got one. I walked a few blocks over to the Vogue with a huge smile on my face.

Now, I went down to Occupy Vancouver with enough money in my pocket for a coffee. I was completely broke due to book purchases and adult responsibilities. So for Mr. Morello to invite us all to his show for no cost…. It was simply unreal. A lot of my friends missed out on a really good time. But I made a few new ones in the process.

Two Seattle boys took the stage first (their names escape me…all apologies). It was a good intro for the concert. Just two dudes playing their guitars. Really mellow tunes. I enjoyed it. After they serenaded the crowd, big bad Tom came out on stage and the people there went ape shit. A friendly crowd instantly formed at the front of the theatre stage. Tom said a few more positive words and got right into the music. There must have been at least 6 different guitars on stage that Tom would switch in and out of throughout the show. He played to every style his creative mind produced. Tom invited fellow guitarist, Carl Restivo of the Freedom Fighter Orchestra, to join him on stage and play along. Restivo was most excellent and added a perfect element to the sounds we all experienced. As a drummer, I was wondering where the drums where at. In "Stompin’ Tom" fashion, Mr. Morello whipped out a Stomping pad and kicked the crap out of it as he and Carl rocked through the program.

Of course, we all heard a couple Rage classics with a new spin taken to each of them. “Guerilla Radio”, and my favourite, a Springsteen cover “The Ghost of Tom Joad”. Most excellent indeedy. The time of tremendous excitement for me came when he picked up the classic “Rage Axe”. You know the one- The electric beast with all the flailing unclipped guitar strings skanking out. I lost my mind when he started shredding it up. It was amazing. All the unique tunrntablist-style scratching and cutting sounds, which -- by the way, was the sound Tom introduced to this genre of music way before bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, or Slipknot. This mothertrucker was doing it on his guitar way before that!!! Insano. He promptly took a page from the immortal Jimi Hendrix and proceeded to play the thing with his teeth… Everyone there went absolutely bonkers.

The crowd… the crowd in attendance at the Vogue that night was nothing short of amazing. There were a few “Pixie Girls”, as Tom labeled them, that decided to jump on stage and flower about. I thought it was pretty funny, although a brief show stopper, Morello made light of the situation and promised everyone that when the time came at the end of the concert, we would all have a chance to jump up on stage with him and sing along. He had an awesome sense of humor and it came out every time he spoke to the audience. I was smiling the whole entire time. A real cool cat for sure. That time did come, and plenty of the crowd did indeed jump up there on stage with the man. I didn’t want to cramp the scene, so I went up into the balcony to get a good view of the final countdown. Tom got everyone in the place to sing along with him as he rocked the new “World Wide Rebel Songs” off of his new album with the same title. It was epic. I left the Vogue still smiling, hopped on the skytrain, got home, and slept like a baby. I got up the next morning with an amazing story to tell everyone.

Now, his music and his positive vibes are Occupying Movements world wide. Tom has been to New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and now Vancouver to support us in what we’re trying to accomplish. He’s keeping on with the tour (which has been going on for a long long time) with the good word to try and cure our ills. My thoughts?? Basically is that we are all tired of the negatives we face in all cultures and walks. Inequality and greed have created some pretty bad situations for a lot of our sisters and brothers. My old friend Chris said this, “ When we get sick, most of us try to ignore it and hope it goes away. Eventually it gets bad enough that we have to go see the doctor.” I think now is the time for all of us to go see that doctor, come together, and share ideas on how we can all prosper and be happy in a progressive flow of positive togetherness. Tom Morello is a true renegade. Please check out his music and listen to what he has to say. He has been inspiring me for years now, and I’m sure he’s got something for you as well.

The Apocalypse Is Upon Us

When Roxy was working fright night, I travelled to the Media Club to see ex-local band Kill Matilda rock the stage.The night was a double CD release party for Kill Matilda's Zombie Apocalypse and Sol's 3 new album. Mia Moth was supposed to open but I was pleasantly surprised when approaching the venue...

I was just showing my ID when I heard a familiar sound. I was like "They're playing Bridges Out on the stereo!" but as i entered i saw them tearing it up on stage! These guys were in the middle of rocking out when I joined and started snapping pictures. They sound exactly like their album and had the stage presence to make their tunes rock. Thumping bass, heavy guitar, soaring keys, and screaming vocals made them sound tight and larger than life on stage. Only thing that would have improved the show was some band on band interaction. Its always a treat when a band is so comfortable on stage that they have fun with themselves as well as the audience. Bridges Out involved the audience and it was apparent that the crowd was familiar with some of their songs, but I would have liked to see some band members rock out with each other. Super tight sound, great crowd involvement, and just overall great performance.

Up next was KUSH. I had only heard of and seen posters of them around Vancouver. Its hard to top a great band like Bridges Out, so even though they had a raw edgy sound their stage presence lacked. It took me a few songs to warm up to their sound. An interesting vocalist with an unusual sound. I would have liked to see some more movement from the whole band, they were very stationary. Their sound was a mix of blues rock and hard rock. Some great guitar licks from both guitarists. The drummer seemed a bit unsure about himself or his playing. I believe the drummer should lead the songs tempo wise and it felt like the drummer was more of a follower. Simple beats but simplicity worked for some of the songs. Great back up vocals from the rhythm guitarist. He had a song where he sang and I really liked his voice. The bass player was ripping on a firebird bass and had the look of a hard rock bassist. Would have liked to see some more movement and maybe some headbanging from him. The whole band LOOKED good, the lead guitarist looked like Petrucci, the lead singer looked like someone from Jersey Shore (in a good way) more of a modern rock look. Keep working boys!

Kill Matilda looked stoked as they hoped up onto the familiar Vancouver stage. They have been touring for over a year now promoting their music all over Canada. Having great success on both radio and TV their music has been reaching new ears and new heights! This band is the real deal. Living the life of a true rock and roll band, the clothes on your back, the instruments in your hand and the music in your hearts. They put on a great show, jumping all around the stage and rocking out like no other. Playing so hard and aggressively its as if they believe the Zombie Apocalypse is happening tomorrow and this is they're last time to play! Dusty, the lead vocalist, always involves and communicates with the crowd. Everyone on that stage looks like they are having so much fun its hard not to join in. A few times I put my camera down and just headbanged. Go see them when they come back to Vancouver! A full album review of their new album Zombie Apocalypse will be coming soon!

Last but not least was Sol. 3, releasing another great album. These look like your normal straight up rock. Looking like a cross between Weezer and Trailer Park Boys. Lots of plaid, glasses. A definite college rock kind of sound. An all around good-time feel kind of band. Definitely had a huge draw of an older crowd. A lot of people dancing and grooving. But nothing super special during the time I spent there. Had to run to catch the skytrain home. But good show guys! Can't wait to check out their album!

Hachiman

Hachiman is the Shinto God of War and protector of the Japanese people, though this Vancouver band likes the name simply because "it rocks!" Hachiman is a loud, 4 membered, modern rock band with an in-your-face style that you just can't ignore; and I got a chance to check out and review their 11 track album. Now, I'm going to do this review a little differently. I'm going to start from the last track, and work my way back to number one. Why? Simply because I want to start off with my favourite tracks from this album!

#11- Time To Fly
This track has a very cool feel to it, though I would like to hear a little bit more in the percussion section. The drums were just a little to simple during the verses, though they worked well in the chorus. The vocals were a perfect fit for this song, and the guitar was very playful and fun. There were some really neat guitar riffs starting around 2:10, that went until about 3:31. As for the bass - it was kept simple and followed along well. It wasn't distinct, but did a great job filling out the sound. Over all, it's a very catchy tune.

#10- So Wonderful
This was certainly one of my favourites on the album. I could picture this as a music video easily. This track reminded me of another local band, Lift Off. The vocals and back vocals were perfectly put together and on pitch. The varied drum kicks really added to the beat, along with bass which followed the kick expertly; and the guitar solo(s) were dynamic and, well, awesome. Excellent for this song. All in all, it's fantastically mixed, and ready for your stereos!

#9- Runaway
Now, this track is yet another favourite. Why? Simply because it's very catchy, and all of the elements were there! Bass, drums, guitar, vocals - it's fully complete, and radio worthy. The vocal effects made it sound as if this song was song by a different person than the other tracks, but who knows.. maybe it was! It had a very early Green Day vibe to it. Definitely one to listen to again and again.

#8- Nothing Better To Do
This track comes off sounding almost surf-punk. It had very Offspring-esque drums, a bluesy rock guitar solo, and Sex Pistol style vocals. Though it was pulled together nicely. Though it's the shortest song on the album, it leaves one of the best impressions.

#7- My Time
This song was the most "Metal" sounding on the album, and Hammer's favourite track. It reminded me of yet another local band, called Iron Kingdom. You can finally hear some distinct bass runs, and the guitar was very well structured/phrased. It had long held out choruses, and shorter, punchier verses. The lead was a little too "hidden," and got lost in the mix during a lot of the song though. Over all, a great sound.

#6- Just A Little
Despite the title, there was definitely more than "Just A Little" going on in this song. It had a very AC/DC mixed with Van Halen feel to it. The drums, guitar, and bass were punchy and on-point. They accompanied the vocals very well. The guitar solo was fantastic, and again, had a very AC/DC sound to it.

#5- Flavor Of The Month
This song had a perfect "Skate-Punk" sound, and I could invision it in a video game or skate movie for sure. The vocals are very versatile, though a little too loud; and drowned out the other instruments in parts. As for the guitar, drums, and bass - they were just right for the track. Flowed together nicely, and did a great job of keeping your ear interested.

#4- Don't Judge Me
This tune had great structure and melody, and some really cool effects throughout. The kick drum, in comparison to the snare, sounded a little weak. The drums as a whole could sound a little more up-front. The vocals were hot, and the chorus' super catchy. Well produced, and almost radio ready I'd say. Just fatten up those drums a little bit, and you'll have a great Alt. Rock track hitting the airwaves!

#3- Detroit Rock City
This was a nice attempt at a cover. Everything was there - all the right notes and beats - but no one can do Kiss like Kiss. When doing a cover like this, one should really try and make it their own. Add something to it, change up the drums, add a synth - something! It was a good attempt, but it needed something to make it their own.

#2- Call Before You Come
This was definitely a classic rock style tune, though it's not in the same league as some of the later tracks. The drums sounded fairly hollow, the bass was kept simple, and the lead was unconvincing and buried in the mix. The vocals had some nice attempts at harmonies, but they were just very hard to hear. Over all, the whole song could have been mixed better. It has the right ideas, they just need to be spoken more clearly.

#1- Bad Girl
This tune had some good rock style vocals, which the guitar follows nicely. The bass lines weren't distinct, but filled out the sound. As for the drums - they could be more dynamic. I thought it was a little weird doing side sticks in a rock beat, but it's all in the ear of the beholder!

I'd like to see the whole album mixed better, but all in all, this album is one I'd keep near the stereo to play over again. The songs were made to radio length, but didn't seem too short, and all of the lyrics and melodies were catchy. The guitar riffs and licks were interesting to listen to, and the rhythm section kept the beat nice and strong. You've Been Fubar'ed

Last night Hammer and I were lucky enough to be invited down to Venue on the Granville Street Strip, to check out a commentary by Deaner himself during Fubar 2, then two fantastic performances by a band called MONSTER TRUCK, and Deaner's band NIGHTSEEKER. The whole shebang just blew my mind! I think Vancouver bands could honestly learn a thing or two about performing from these guys!

Having seen both Fubar 1, and Fubar 2, watching the movie and listening to Deaner's commentary was just downright hilarious! The whole place was packed full of hardcore Fubar/Nightseeker fans, hootin, hollering, and laughing outrageously along with him. There were women in denim jackets, men sporting mullets and flannel, and a beer in everyone's hands! It was like being a part of the film. Definitely something worth remembering!

Monster Truck hit the stage promptly after the movie, and took it by storm! Man those guys can rock. They had strong hooks, lavish instrumentation, and great lyrical melodies. They moved extremely well on stage, had great chemistry with the audience, and had so much energy, stage presence, and skill it was near-mindblowing. They have a new album dropping on October 18th (which will be reviewed here on Hammer Records shortly) which I'd reccommend everyone to check out. It definitely kicks some ass! They will also be back in Vancouver soon - so make sure to like them on FACEBOOK to keep up to date!

NIGHTSEEKER came on stage in a foggy haze. All the members were there, minus Deaner... who crept up in the fog sporting an enclosed cape and a Darth Vader mask! It was a very neat way to start the show, and really captured the audience's attention. After the first song, the drums broke, for simply "Given 'er too hard" said Deaner. They filled in the time fixing the kit by introducing all the band members. Very clever and effective! They quickly jumped into the rest of their set, complete with multiple crowd sufings from the energetic and slightly intoxicated front man/bass player - until the next malfunction! One of the guitarists' amps blew from, again, Given 'er too hard. Though thankfully, all was worked out, and the show went on! Each member of the band really knew how to play well, while giving an amazing, fun, performance to their fans. I really didn't know what to expect of the vocals, but they were strong, and almost flawless! A perfect rock/metal type voice. To end the night, Nightseeker threw out an AMAZING cover of "Run To The Hills." Every person in the venue cheered, sang, and danced/moshed along on the floor. It was a wicked show. One I would definitely go see again in a heartbeat! Make sure to go like and check them out on FACEBOOK for more of their tunes, and tour dates!

Stars of Shock

Last Tuesday Hammer and I had the pleasure of being invited down to the Roxy on the Granville strip to catch no other than TWO previous Fox Seeds winners - Stars of Boulevard and State of Shock! Having caught State of Shock during this years Fox Seeds competition as a guest star for the Granville Street show; we knew they were gonna rock it!

Stars of Boulevard is a very appropriate name for this Vancouver band, for they really know how to rock out like superstars! Previously, I'd only heard their songs online and seen some live footage on youtube. So, needless to say, I was excited for their set that night.. and was not disappointed!! The guitar riffs were catchy and powerful; ripping people's attention from their drinks and conversations to the stage before them. Ken Abbey (guitarist) could have moved around a little bit more, but over all he was fantastic. Especially when accompanied by a fantastic rhythm section! Drummer, Matty Carolei, was incredible!! His hands were fast like a bullet, producing some really showy drum beats, his showmanship was over the top, and we were QUITE impressed! Bassist, Johnny Kaye, had some really great lines as well, and really helped fill out the found - but unfortunately, he didn't help fill out the stage. I feel he was lacking a bit of energy and could have moved or interacted a little more, but all in all a very skilled musician. As for the vocals? Well, they were absolutely captivating. Lead singer, Josh Abel, had every girl's eyes and hearts in his hands. Between his stage presence and his melodies, he wooed the crowd. This band, to put it simply, kicks ass! I recommend anyone and everyone to check them out HERE.

It's always a pleasure to see this band perform. These native Vancouverites have played all kinds of shows, from little clubs like the Roxy and small stages set up right on Granville Street, to big name stages and arenas - and they play every venue in the same fashion - with as much energy as possible, with lots of personality thrown in! Their playing is spot on - From the cool licks and riffs from both lead and rhythm guitarists, Jesse Wainwright and Simon Clow (known to everyone as Kadooh), to the fat bass lines from bassist Alyson (Aly) Toews, and not to mention the wicked beats coming from drummer, Johnny Philippon!! Throw Cameron Melynk's vocals and songwriting into the mix, and you've got a hit! But I'm sure with songs/singles like "Money Honey," "Best I Ever Had," and "Too Pretty" you already knew that. Though, it's not just their killer skills that makes them so great... It's their stage presence! I love seeing how much personality this band puts in to each performance. For example, with songs like "Best I Ever Had" and "Too Pretty," Cameron Melnyk will often turn to bassist/backup singer Aly, and sing the lyrics right to her; as if written just for her. Other little gems include all the band members (minus the drummer) playing around with each other's mic stands, causing them to crouch very low to sing their parts; or tossing each other's back up pics into the crowd. It's well worth any ticket price to see these guys (and gal!!) take the stage. I'd say go check them out - but I'm sure you already have!! Madness, Just Pure Madness

Back when I was in a band, I remember sharing the stage with Crimson Roots and being shocked at how tight and amazing they sounded. Now after almost a whole year later, Roxy and I caught them at the Railway Club with The Hutchinson Effect.

The Hutchinson Effect was as unique as their name. A merge of two old bands to create this juggernaut of sound. This was their first show and it showed of course, but you can tell they are old pros at being on a stage. All very sound musicians but some songs were tighter than others for sure. The singer was definitely the most eccentric. Leaping around the small stage and swishing his Led-Zep-esc hair around. Showing off his dance moves during some of the songs he did what appeared to be a small jig. Very strong bass lines and craft full guitar work complimented the vocals. The drums were interesting for me, instead of playing a straight ahead rock beat he often switch to almost a shuffle beat during some songs. A very interesting spin and added depth to the songs. Definitely catch these guys at their next show!

Crimson Roots took to the stage and started off with a classic stoner rock tune to set the mood for the rest of the set. Heavy riffs tighter than the Pope's shut eyes. This band has progressed so much since I last saw them. Songs are well written, sensible length, great riffs, varying vocals in different songs, and the sound is always dynamic. A key element in their set was there between songs there was little to no gaps in sound. At the end of a song the bass player would hit a delay pedal and have his last bass lick repeating until they launched into their next song, or the drummer would keep the beat going, or the guitars would do some back and forth licks. It makes for smooth transitions and never loosing the audiences ears. A big plus was that all of them sang, either lead or backup. Made for rich harmonies and easier for the crowd to roar along with the band.

Whats Your Zeitgeist?

September 11th is a big day in our history; one no one will ever forget, or should ever forget. This year was the 10th anniversary, and Hammer and I took to one of the many events that occurred to join in on the awareness of those we lost, and those we saved. Zeitgiest festival was being held downtown Vancouver at the Art Gallery - and let me just say, it was a great day out in the sun! The weather was beautiful, there were lots of people, and the music was phenomenal. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to see every band or speaker, but those we did see (Gentle Infidels, Green Tree, Childsplay, Ready Set Die, and Gentleman Prefer Blondes) rocked it.

The Gentle Infidels are an amazing acoustic act. A mixture of folk, rock, and metal influences. A very dark haunting timbre to their music captures your ear instantly. An acoustic bass maned by Ferdy Belland who is a bass legend, guitar by Edwin whose unique vocals flow into your ear drums, and finally finished off by cellist Christina Rzepa who wields the brown beast. Green Tree has been featured on Hammer Records a few times and we've loved seeing them grow and develop as a band. They played superbly, tight, energetic, and sounded great. A few off harmonies at points but amazing emotion in every song. Such a personable band that connects with their fans and audience. We have a live DVD in the works with them at the moment and will be released shortly! Check out this growing young band on Facebook!

Hammer had to leave for work at the studio, so I was left to cover the rest of the bands and enjoy the festivities and presentations. The first band I caught was Childsplay. I'd heard good things about this band, but had yet to see them live. They brought forth a great Punk-Rock sound, and a lot of energy! I'd love to see them play a full set sometime soon. These guys are definitely worth checking out! Check out and like them on Facebook!

The next band to hit the stage was Ready Set Die. This band simply kicks ass. The female vocalist/guitarist had amazing stage presence and attitude while performing; As did the bassist and drummer, who worked well filling out their indie-pop-punk sound. I saw a lot of heads bobbing and feet tapping while they played. Though, something different happened during their set! About halfway through, at 4:20 pm, a guest speaker at the Zeitgeist festival came up and did a speech about marijuana, sang "Oh Cannabis" acapella, then exited the stage, leaving Ready Set Die to continue rocking out. It was quite an experience. Check out and like them on Facebook!

The final band that evening, headlining the whole event, was Fox Seeds 2011 Top Three Finalist, Gentleman Prefer Blondes! I was really excited to see their set, and they did not disappoint. Every member of the band brought forth their 'A'-Game, and did what they do best - ROCK OUT! From the front man alone, there was so much energy coming off that stage, let alone adding the rest of the guys! I saw every person in the audience either moving to the music, or standing and cheering them on. Towards the end of their set, the band brought out a poster of guitarist, Chris, lying down shirtless to giveaway to whomever rocked out the hardest - and let's just say every lady, single or not, was up near that stage with arms out-stretched! Over all, this band is fantastic and have a great sound that everyone would enjoy. I'd recommend checking out their music, and liking their page asap. This band is gonna make it big! Facebook Page!

Bringing The Show With Them

When someone invites you on a party bus, there's only one answer. Yes. And when its one of your favourite local bands your answer is double yes. LiftOff invited Hammer Records aboard their party bus to their show in Langley. It was an amazing adventure. By the time we arrived at the show though we missed the first band and caught the second.

Tarl took the stage and sounded amazing. Super tight. Great stage presence. Well written catchy songs with strong melodies. The Dance floor was surprisingly empty though. I know Vancouver bands tend to have a hard time bringing out fans to venues like Langley or Delta. So Roxy and I tried to dance our feet off to compensate. Definitely catch these guys in action at their next show!

The one advantage of bringing fans to the venue is that you know at least 20 people will be there up front and centre for you. Lift Off played superbly that night. Rocking out their modern rock tunes with their calm collective. Great use of the stage, always playing off each others energy. The set it self had great dynamics. Going between high energy songs to beautiful ballads and ending the set with a fist pumper. Inviting everyone up on the stage to rock out with the band was an amazing spectacle.

The Bleach Babes are a rock band with many influences. The released their 9 track album "Losers" on August 13th. They were fairly short tracks, but I was surprised with how much diversity there were on them. Never a dull moment.

The First track, Slush, is an "intro track". It starts with a whining sound and builds into a symphony of sound. Though some sounds may be corrosive to the ear at first listen, once you dig through you can imagine a ghostly image. Bass and drums lay down an underlying vibe but it's the wailing, screeching, guitar that leads that song. Instant statement, "We are different".

Launching right into a punk rock vibe, Kaleidoscope, brings the energy with crazy drums, fat, though simple, bass lines and hammering guitar. The vocals have great melodies, great phrasing, and though edgy, still easy on the ears. This is a tune to listen to when either snowboarding or skateboarding; Or even surfing (if you have a waterproof case).

Starting off with more of a laid back feel, Basement Trash, is the third song on the album. Solid bass line and steady drums hold the song until the whole band kicks into the chorus with a unified riff which really packs a punch. Trading back into the quieter parts are great for the verses, really adding dynamics and feel to the song. Reminds me of Nirvana. Then, after the final chorus, they slam into double time with a catchy hook to finish the song. Tight.

Rain Check has a great vibe. Solid instrumental with a kind of sway feeling to it. Not quite heavy but not at all soft. Once again great vocal lines. The humming vocal lines are my favourite. They really separate this track from the rest. It's more commercial than the rest of the songs on "Loser." I also love the drumming in this. Not overly complicated, but the perfect amount to fill out the song and keep it interesting to the ear.

Following the age old rule of album dynamics, they kick it up a few notches with Super 6, the shortest track on their album. They start with a catchy, head bobbing riff and then blast it! With the awesome drum beat feel, it just keeps you head banging. I bet this track would sound sound amazing live. Simple to follow the build of the song and great to mosh to.

Love Rug keeps the heart pumping with another rocky-edge tune. By now the listener has heard the sound of the band and their guitar riffing songs with slower vocals and hum catch lines overtop. Wished they had done something new with this tune, music wise. Though, near the end the guitar adds a cool flanger which brings the track to a whole new level! You don't see flanger being used a lot in tracks these days, and I was stoked to hear it come forth at the end.

Dracula, once again, highlights the drummer. Very different beats than the usual 4/4 beats. They then go into a punk beat of high intensity. This tune reminds me so much of Nirvana. Just the way everything is thrown in with such passion but with such a nonchalant-ness. Good tune.

Sandbox brings out a whole new feel once again. Starting with guitar, then drum fill, and then bass, really fills out the sound. A very summery feeling to the song. Great riff and rhythm to the song. I kept expecting the vocals to come in but was surprised to find it an instrumental. This is my favourite track. Not because of the fact there are no vocals, but because without the vocals the riffs and drums and bass get a chance to breath and fill each others space, really sounding united. Great song to blast in the car.

The last track, Beach Babes, is the longest track on their album. It sounds like a track that really defines them. All the elements from the other tracks were there, thrown into one, in a new way! Wished the bass had a few licks that didn't follow the guitar, but solid playing overall. Sounds almost like a surf-punk tune with a little more edge.

The album all together has a cool sound. Not the highest production value, but I don't think this style of music needs it. Mixing wise, I would have liked to hear the drums mixed a bit louder with more kick. The cymbals were great, really filling out the space, but would have liked to hear that driving force of the kick leading the songs on. The vocals were in tune and had that punk feel to it. The guitar was driving and not overly complicated. Bass thumped along at all the right parts. Definitely worth a download, and listen to!

Remember when you and your family used to go camping and sit around the fire singing songs? If you don't... then come find out what it feels like! Such an amazing joyous atmosphere. Unlike karaoke no one person is put on the spot to sing. The whole crowd unites in song and for those who don't know the words there are handy binders at every table with the lyrics. They play everything from The Clash, Rolling Stones, The Ramones, to Queen and Johnny Cash. A truly unique experience!

Last night James and I had the pleasure of going out to the Cellar Night Club in downtown Vancouver, to catch the final night of the Molson Canadian Launch Contest! On the bill for night was Vancouver band, The Shrugs, Langley band, Cruel Young Heart, and Victoria band, Handsome Distraction! Let's just say it was a wicked show, with one hell of a lot of dancing!

The Shrugs played a brilliant set, though having the unfortunate spot of being first, they didn't have that many people on the dancefloor.. BUT there were certainly tons of heads bobbing and feet tapping surrounding the area! As always, Caitlin Connelly's vocals blew my mind! She has such a strong, power-house voice with near-perfect control! Not once did I hear those dynamic vocals fail to deliver. Alongside the great vocal work, were the rest of the musicians in the band! Stephanie Cole, the bassist, played spectacularily and had a wonderful stage presence about her, Brandon Johnas shredded it up on guitar, playing mad riffs and wicked melodies, and Dan Beavington was the one to get all those heads moving, and feet tapping with his bang-on drum rhythms! The name Cruel Young Heart might sound familiar to some of our readers out there - and that's because not too long ago I claimed them as my favourite local band, and to this day the title stands! These guys are absolutely incredible, and bring so much energy to the stage! James Blackmon's vocals are to-die-for, Mark Armstrong's guitar riffs were captivating and insane!!, Andrew Blackmon's drum beats were downright groovy, and with the fella slappin' the bass that night, it really was spectacular. These guys had every person in the venue dancing, clapping, and even singing along to their catchy tunes. Even though their set was shorter than a normal show, they stayed true to tradition and came back on in a change of costume, as well as with a big shiny disco ball!!, and rocked another couple songs. It came as no surprise to me that Cruel Young Heart was announced the winner of the Molson Launch Contest later that evening. Congrats to all of you! Handsome Distraction is not a name I was familiar with before last night, even having lived in Victoria for the previous 6 years, so I really didn't know what to expect. This four piece rock band had a lot of energy on stage, and some pretty catchy songs. They had a very rocky feel, and lead singer/rhythm guitarist, Devin Perfect's, vocals reminded me a little bit of The Smashing Pumpkins; Chris Weaver's bass runs were simple, but that's exactly what fits with this genre of music; Corey Francis had some really great guitar riffs, but nothing too flashy. I'd like to see some kind of effects thrown in on a couple of tracks though. And to wrap up the whole sound was Kyle White's tight drum progressions. Over all they had a huge, straight-up rocky, sound. Will definitely have to keep my eye out for these guys the next time I'm in Victoria. Getting Stoned With Moses And His Crew

After a night at the Roxy with Aviator Shades, Roxy and I headed across the street to Joe's Apartment to check out Stoned Moses, Satori Tide and Random Dander. Was definitely a ska funk filled night!

Random Dander hit the stage first. Very unique sound. Kind of folk funk if i was to try and label it. Very energetic band as they danced and jammed around the stage. But look wise a very crazy cast of characters. From the bass player who looked like Jesus, to the backup singer rocking the microphone and dancing the night away. Now I'm a short guy but it doesn't help being a short front man when the rest of the band is fairly tall. But just added to that extra ordinary experience. But he owned that microphone with his rough gruff voice. And an amazing drummer in the back, playing such strong tight beats. Totally had the "in-my-zone" look on her face the whole set. Very interesting band! check them out!

Its just common courtesy to your audience to set up as quickly as you can after the next band, but its also courtesy for the band after you. Setting up late only delays their set time, and if they start playing at 12:30 it means people will leave before their set is up to catch the sky-train. I don't know what delayed them in setting up but they took over 45 minutes to set up a four piece band. Normally if you set up late, you cut your set time down to compensate. Not only did they set up late, they played over their set time. After saying "Our final song of the night" they played 3 more tunes after it. Even when the sound guy went up to the stage and gave them the "kill" signal they continued playing. Sorry guys, I'll stop my rant now, but just bugs me (formally being in bands)

As for the band itself Satori Tide had a really chill kind of vibe. On some songs edging a bit on rock but mostly this kind of surf ska. Cool sound, covered some sublime songs which was cool and great because the crowd loved it! But being a chill band doesn't mean you have to stand still the whole night long. Frequently the bass player looked at the drummer and just jammed with him. Not a lot of crowd involvement.

Stoned Moses set up in record time for a 9 piece band, but instead of starting right away they took a drink break and let their MC's hit the stage and set the groove. After each beat another member of Stoned moses moved in to join them on stage. Great build up to their set. They are a beast of spontaneous nature. Built on jamming out tunes and vibes until a song comes to form they thrive on stage playing off each other and no show is ever the same. Keeping the crowd dancing with there grooving bass lines and funky drums. I have yet heard a studio recording able to capture their true essence. The crowd is as much a part of the band as they themselves. Even at one point getting up and dancing with the band on stage. True Stoned Moses style they were dancing until the bar closed. Having sold out the venue! Keep an eye open for these boys!

Hammer Records made it out to another Aviator Shades show. They rocked the Roxy with touring band from Saskatchewan. They are always improving and becoming more powerful with their set. The Roxy had great sound so the band sounded great. A perfect balance of guitars whom both played lead. The bass was thick and heavy and the drums were pounding! They have gathered a new drummer and he learnt all the songs for the show in a week and sounded super tight. The band has really matured their sound and tightened the set into a rocking good time! Vancouver In Shock

Every year 99.3 The Fox puts on a free show on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver for the Seeds winners, and they're known to always bring in a big band to headline the show. This year I finally had my camera and was able to document the amazing show. So, Roxy and I embarked downtown to witness the mightiness of the Top 3 Seeds bands Head Of The Herd, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Louder Than Love. But to top it all off, State Of Shock (previous Seeds Winners) came to rock the stage. Sadly due to traffic, and short notice of the show, we missed Head Of The Herd; but heard they played a great set.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes just finished setting up when we got there and we watched them rock the stage. Looking a little out of their comfort zone, playing with their amps facing the back of the stage (for sound reasons), they played a solid set. Trying to hype up the crowd and moving energetically around the floor they just seemed to not connect with the crowd as much as some of the later bands did. Some of it was due to the mixing of the sounds, such as, the guitars were down too much in the mix for their guitar driven hard rock, and the guitar solos were lost to peoples ears because of being turned down too much. But that definitely didn't stop these driven musicians from giving it all they had.

Louder Than Love brought everything up a notch as they played a beautiful set. You can tell this bunch of guys are born rockers. Each member displaying great stage presence and the singer really reaching out to the crowd and creating an amazing connection between band and audience. Their music was dynamic and full of life as they seemed to effortlessly pull off these challenging songs. The vocals were like candy as they poured out from the speakers, the guitars were huge sounding and could sound heavy and thick or crisp and delicate, the drums were godlike as they pounded from the back, and the bass was thick and heavy playing tight rhythmic lines. This band is going somewhere. So watch out!

State of Shock just slayed. `Nuff said. Having never seen them before, I didn't know what to expect from this Seeds Winner from years before that have gone around spreading their music for years. Having some great hits (their most well known "Money Honey") I was eager to see how they played live. They blew all my expectations out of the water! Starting off with a backing track intro and ripping into a very catchy tune right away grabbed my interest, and continued to keep my attention the whole time with new twists, turns, dynamics, chords, solos, and every trick in a rock-band's sleeve as they just nailed their set. Little gems between band members stick out, some which are highlighted in the video footage, but the lead guitarist playing around with the rhythm guitarists microphone while he's playing was fun to watch, as well as when the singer leapt down and hugged the crowd while singing was perfect. This band made the show an experience the whole crowd will never forget. Combined with perfect playing and great tunes, this was a night to remember!

Hello Disquiet -Bridges OUT

I remember walking into the Media Club and hearing this noise from the stage. Going to investigate, I see a crowd of dedicated metal heads, rockers and punks rocking out to this band rocking the stage. After headbanging and soaking in these monstrous tunes I sought the name of the band who had just rox'ed my soxs. Bridges OUT was that name.

Hello Disquiet is their brand new EP and it definitely is anything but quiet. The opening track (Goodbye Terra Firma) starts off with a bang, leaving the listener no second guesses at what they got them selves into by putting the CD into their car stereo. Following the good old formula a verse follows the opening riffs and you get your first taste of Marin Sykes's vocals. His unique voice cuts through the mix quiet well. A different voice than the standard stuff out on the radio now a days. Full of pain and sorrow, a very emotive voice. And he steps it up as he screams and growls his very soul into the microphone. But on a dime back to his melodic vocals. The opening track was a great demonstration of their sound and talent. A nice mixture of heavy versus soft and structured well. Nice piano work during the bridge, nothing too fancy leaving lots of room for the vocals to get nice and quiet and intimate. Great track to open or close a show with.

Aural Hygiene, the second track, starts of very similar to the 1st track which kinda of disappointed me, wished this track had been spaced out a bit more from the first track so not as obvious. But during the verses a really cool guitar tremolo effect drew my ear right off from the opening riff immediately. Screaming verses leading into a melodic pre-chorus launching right into a catchy huge chorus really made me feel the build of the song. Screaming vocals reminds me of Alexisonfire screaming (RIP Alexisonfire) at times. A note on the guitar work on this song. Very nice guitar lines, lots of dimensions and interchanging melodies. Love the synth lines on this track, really thickens things out. Another epic breakdown bridge which would be a lot of fun to headbang too. One of my personal favourite tracks of the album.

The 3rd track, A Vigil, A Sentence, was the most dynamic track on the album. Going from thrash riffs to modern rock riffs. Love the drumming on this track. Each beat perfectly suited for the section of the song. changing feel and rhythm but never loosing the driving force behind the beat. A very cool breakdown quiet part in the middle of the song made me realize once again this band can change on a dime. Another catchy chorus had me singing in my car as I'm driving down the highway. Never sticking on a thought too long 3/4 through the song they threw in a new riff which brings you right back to the chorus for a final couple of times. Great tune to keep things fresh!

The end of the previous track flows right into the next, Obligatory Nautical Theme, which starts off like the 1st track ended. Another highlight of the guitar work on this track. Some very complicated riffs which are smooth like silk. The bass always goes unmentioned but without it all these tracks would be lost. I find it the grounding between everything. Playing some nice steady lines with some complicated licks thrown in for good measure. This track would be a perfect ending with its catch last chorus pounding into your head. The dividing and joining melodies made me shiver the first time I heard this track.

A very sick album!! Tight recording, great sound, lots of low end to make your speakers shake but with nice crisp. Wished a few more structured songs to easily predict choruses, just so people won't get lost but great songs! Such emotion written within each tune. Short and sweet this EP is 15 minutes of non stop action!

Are You Before Helen?

I haven't been out to many all ages shows, but the few i have been to have ranged from 5 people to 30 people. But usually those 5-30 people are the most energetic people I've ever seen. And this was no different going out to Coquitlam to see Before Helen's CD release party.

Only a week ago we saw The Chimpanzebras rock the Roxy with Kristen Karma. They opened the night up yet again. Sadly the sound system was ill equipped to handle their dynamic sound. While a good mix, the vocals were quite distorted giving unnecessary edge to their sound. While playing a good set and communicating with the audience the bunch of youngsters didn't seem overly thrilled. Great set guys.

Once again We've seen Green Tree before, but they have greatly improved since the last time we saw them. Reminding me a lot of High School Musical mixed with Glee. Really good new songs. Loved their recording of their single. Good to hear they are heading back into the studio. I hope they work hard and come out with a product worthy of their talent. I think with the right producer and engineer their song Mountain could really be a hit. The drummer has an amazing voice and I wish he sang up and front more. Would be very cool to see them grab another drummer and having a singing duo up front. Solid show. Their have the loyalist fan's I've seen from any band their age. Just keep on truckin!

Before Helen was supposed to open up for Kristen Karma but was unable due to their drummer already being booked. Their drummer was amazing one of the most pounding drummer I've seen at an all ages show. The lead guitarist was also the sound engineer for the show. Sadly leaving it up to your friend while your playing usually doesn't go so well as was the case that night when the constantly feedback loops were distracting from the show. But that didn't bother the band at all. They rocked hard. The lead singer really taking control of the whole situation and had a very commanding stature on stage. A very kind of "it's my show, don't F*ck with me". Sadly the mix keep bugging me. I wanted to step in and fix it but didn't want to step on any toes. Crowd responded well to the headliner. Cant wait to see this band further down their career!

Keep the scene alive guys, all ages can rock.

Ever Wonder About The Space Between Stars?

Hmm. Do those vocals sound a little familiar? Does that shredding of guitar leave you thinking you've heard something like this before, but perhaps softer and poppier? The correct answer is yes! A little while ago I reviewed a band called Halfway To Hollywood's EP, and upon it Jacob Owen Lutje is featured! Though Jacob does not just play lead guitar, and sing back vocals for HTH, he fronts Idol Underground (as well as plays lead and bass on this single) too!; With Jordan Funk accompanying him on drums. A heavier sound for him, but I think it really works well.

This song starts off with some really neat background vocal effects, and leads into some sweet riffs on guitar. The vocals kick in not long after, and you can hear that the levels were mixed perfectly to showcase not only his voice, but the instruments behind as well. The lyrics are simple, and to the point - which is perfect for this genre of music. The chorus itself is very easy to catch on to, and seems to double lyrically each time it comes around! A very neat hook I must say!

After the second chorus, at 2:05, there is a 1 minute, 25 second instrumental break. It starts off soft and melodic, and after about 37 seconds, a heavier drum beat kicks in, along with some sweet licks and solos on guitar for another 36 seconds! At about the 3:18 mark it slows down again, and then vocals kick back in nice and strong at 3:30 to finish off the song! Some might think that's a fairly long instrumental break, but it really does keep your attention the whole way through.

Definitely a different, heavier sound than the poppy Halfway To Hollywood, but I certainly dig it! It is available for download HERE on iTunes, and make sure to keep your eye out for a new single dropping this month. For more on Idol Underground, visit their FACEBOOK page. You won't regret it!

The Roxy Has Good Karma

Due to scheduling conflicts the opening band Before Helen was unable to play. So The Chimpanezebras opened the night up on short notice! They brought out a few friends to cheers beers with. They had a fun sound! Rocking and kind of circusy actually. Very indie and alternative. Tight band and totally playful. Maybe a little more playful than normal because playing for just their friends, or maybe a little less playful because of the lacking crowd. I'll have to go check out another show to know! Good band, check them out!

Kristen Karma has invest a lot into her show to make it a spectacular experience. Sadly not many people were there to witness the extravaganza. I know its hard to bring people out for an early show on a wednesday but i was disappointed with the turnout. But none the less she rocked the stage. Using her vast array of effects she sang her heart into that microphone. Backed by a band she used a combination of live instruments and backing tracks to deliver her vast array of songs. The drummer threw in a lot of drum tricks as he slammed his kit. Bass player fingered his bass expertly but I had wished he had moved around a bit. Both him and guitarist kinda just stood there which looked odd compared to Kristen moving around. A little interaction would be nice. Cool sound! But just wished it had been a bigger crowd!

Proving You Don't Need CD's for a CD Release Party!

Returning from tour once again Versus The Nothing was eager to play for a home crowd. After seeing their last show at the Media Club I didn't think anything could top it, but as usual, I was wrong.

Thorntry opened the night up to a small crowd, warming the stage for the coming onslaught. Playing some very tight riffs and easily head bangable songs I thought they sounded a little like Black Sabbath, but with a heavy Metallica influence. I know its hard as an opening band to get "into it" but would have liked to see some more movement around the stage. The drummer was using VTN's drums so i think he was a little out of his element and it sounded like their guitarist was having an off day. While playing super tight rhythm riffs, his leads were not his strong points and stuck out like a sore thumb. Sick axe he was wielding, but some awkward moments. The bass player was tight and fat and his sound really filled out the tracks. I would like to see them in a few months and see them kick some ass!

I had heard a lot about the next band but had never seen them play. Senticsphere rocked the stage taking things up about several notches. A true powerhouse of sound. Reminding me of the local band Macula with their modern rock driven sound. Frontman Warren's vocals amped up the crowd as the band behind him rocked hard. I swear Luongo was playing bass on that stage, the bass player looked a lot like him and half expected him to be wearing hockey gear! The band worked well together. Stay tuned for more stuff from them! They are back in fighting force and ready to take over the world!

The show was already getting pretty late, starting pretty late and long breaks between bands, I was worried Roxy and I would have to leave the show early to catch the last sky train. So we were happy to see the headliners take to the stage, I must say, well worth the wait. Versus The Nothing reminded me why I love to local music scene. True rock heroes, traveling with the clothes in their back and the instruments in their hands. After months of touring they had sharpened their skills to a pinpoint of perfection. The singer just threw himself around the stage as he roared into the microphone. Doing pull ups on the rafters, jumping, spinning, even failing at points. I remember hearing "She's A Killer" just as they released the single, now after fine tuning the song they rocked it quite early into their set. But it seemed like everyone in the club knew the lyrics to that song. Taking things up another 10 notches they blew that stage apart! Sadly they had no physical copies of their CD at the show, but it is available on CD baby and iTunes! SO CHECK IT OUT! I can guarantee you wont be disapointed!

A Little Travel Goes A Long Way

Last night Hammer and I traveled all the way to Langley, BC to the only rock venue in town - the Troubador Club! And ROCK is exactly what it does! It's a great venue with a big dance floor, huge stage, lots of seating, and amazing sound! Three bands took the stage last night, A Frosty Comet, Cruel Young Heart, and The Proper Villains.

The first to hit the stage was A Frosty Comet. They had a lot of energy and worked the stage well. Besides some guitar trouble in the beginning of the set, they had a really tight, amazing sound. Though they played a lot of covers, it really worked for them - and the crowd! As an opening band, you don't expect many people to be on the dance floor, but A Frosty Comet surprised all and had many ladies dancing up a storm! I would certainly recommend anyone to check these guys out!

Next up was Cruel Young Heart! Now, I didn't know what to expect from this local Langley band, having never heard them before - but they stole my heart, and have now been placed as my favourite local band! I couldn't stop dancing, jumping, and singing along during their entire set, along with many many other ladies, AND lads! These men had amazing stage presence, fun costume changes, GREAT songs (instrumental wise, as well as lyrically!), and they even gave me a gift-wrapped present at the end of their fourth or fifth song! Inside was their four-song, self titled, EP. Needless to say, we listened to it on repeat all the way home! DEFINITELY make sure to check these guys out!

Last but certainly not least was The Proper Villains. This name might sound familiar to you, and that's because you've heard their song "Your Heart" played on 94.5 The Beat a few times daily. This dynamic group is certainly making a name for themselves! After the Cruel Young Heart set, I wasn't too sure how TPV would come across, knowing only their two singles myself, but they wowed everyone! The vocal performance was great, the energy was fantastic, and the instrumentals were so tight! I think I saw everyone in the place dancing! They even invited anyone who wanted to to come up on the stage and dance with them during their last number. It goes without saying that I was definitely up there! This group is one to keep your eye, and ear! on, and I suggest you all check them out on their journey to the top!

"Will You" Check Out Diamond Dancer?

For anyone who likes bands such as Explosions In The Sky and/or Mineral, you will dig the sound of Diamond Dancer. I got the chance to hear their upcoming EP, "Will You?" before it drops tomorrow, July 26th. The album was recorded and mastered by super indie engineer, Stuart McKillop, at Raincity Records. The best way to describe their sound would be that they have "somber music accompanied by shy yet heartfelt vocals, singing in all seriousness about mundane problems." These were my thoughts on "Will You?"

The first track on the album is titled, "Only If You Believe In The Power Of Friendship." It is an instrumental piece with a soothing sound, and cool riffs and melodies. The end of the song leads right into the second track flawlessly. You'd almost think it just to be an extra long intro, but no, this is what we would call a "concept album." Where each song flows effortlessly into the next! Definitely a cool idea for a sound like this.

The next track is titled, "Lost In Echo Park." In this song, there are strong male vocals which intertwine melodically with that of the instruments. It's a really cool idea if you can pull it off well; which is exactly what they have done!

The third song is entitled, "Bellis Fair." The vocals in this song are very soft, and seem to have a very heartfelt feel. Again, the instruments have an almost "calming" sound to them. The members of this band seem to work magically together, to pull off that perfect 90s emo/emocore/indie rock-esque sound - which I believe is what they were aiming for!

Now the fourth song, "Sleepling In Mount Pleasant," surprised me for a moment when I heard a female vocalist. At first it was a little hard to hear her soft vocals, that blended in with the music in the background, but once I tuned my full attention on the song, I could easily pick out her vocals, and the lyrics she was singing.

The fifth and final track is "Long Distance Relationships Rarely Work Out." This track seemed a little daunting at first, being 7 minutes and 41 seconds long - but once I heard it, I could understand why! Diamond Dancer seemed to throw in all that they've got to offer in this song. With an intro of about 1min 10secs long, they showcased some beautiful instrumental work, and then the male vocals came in, nice and strong, and extremely emotive! They then traded off with the soft, melodic sound of the female vocals. Also, throughout the track they had a nice showcasing of "twinkly" guitar riffs, wicked drum beats, and just an overall great sound. Both heavier and softer. This is a track made for all to love!

The Grand has been featured on Hammer Records multiple times because i really dig their sound. Some catchy tunes and a great sound. I've been trying to see them at all different venues to measure their sound at different levels. A close intimate feel really made them shine at The Point in PoCo. They rocked the stage in their usual cool calm collected manner. Great set

Roxy and I travelled to Maple Ridge to a first for Hammer Records , a strip club. Rock and metal combined with half naked women all jammed into a room with HUGE speakers. Was definitely a crazy experience. Sadly we just weren't feeling great that night and a few creepy folks in the venue made us depart after the first band. Big sorry to Angel Down for not being able to see their set! We owe them some photos for their next show for sure. Great band check them out!

But the first band we did catch was Six Gun Confederacy. An amazing combination of punk and rock with some hot shredding licks thrown in for good measure! Reminds me a bit of the band Turbonegro but more raw and ragged. Trying to fit in with the strippers they had their shirts off all through their set. Such aggressive sound and wild movements made for a great show.

Pretty Music In The Park

Ive been a fan of Familia since I had heard their music on myspace. And even more once I saw them live at The Forum and saw their energy combined with their amazing live sound. A true band so in tune with their music. So I was excited to travel all the way to Maple Ridge to see them play live at a country festival. Apparently they had played a set before the one at eight. So by the time they started playing the crowd was a little thin but they were loving it. I loved seeing them play and their sound was amazing. I have a video being uploaded soon! Twisted Iron

I've heard many things about The Yale. Mostly that its a blues bar with an amazing stage but wont let you in if your under 30. Half of that is right. Absolutely amazing huge stage, incredible sound system and great lights. But we got in, though we did get some looks. The crowd was defiantly older than the usual metal show. I was curious on how they would react to Iron Kingdoms double full stacks and double kick. But i forgot this crowd grew up with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and all the classic metal bands that still roam this earth!

Iron Kingdom (formally known as Twisted) took the stage and its the best I've seen them play yet! Very strong stage presence as usual from them but exceptionally better performance from their rhythm guitarist and bass player. Headbanging and moving around they looked ready to take over the world with their metal. Their backing vocals had greatly improved too and I could hear some harmonies! A couple technical issues with patch chords but other than that it was a flawless show. Always showing off new ideas, their new songs sound super tight and I cant wait to hear their upcoming EP. Playing a solid set of old and new tunes and ending off with a classic "Rock You Like A Hurricane" was a perfect end. Catch our interview with them shortly!

Take A Chug Of Southern Death

Last night I found myself at the Roxy yet again, for another fantastic show. (I'm starting to think we're becoming regulars there..) Anyways! On the bill for last night was All Else Fails from Edmonton, AB and Southern Death Threat from here in Vancouver, BC.

All Else Fails has been among my favourite punk/rock/metal bands for a while now, and I was thrilled to see them rock the stage. Their performance completely blew me away! From switching positions across the stage, headbanging, and interacting with the crowd in such unique ways to their tights riffs and instrumentals, amazing vocal dynamics, and almost poetic lyrics. What a show! At one point, Barrett, lead vocalist and guitarist, jumped off the stage and made his way up on a banister to go wail on the guitar. Now is that true entertainment or what? The only thing negative I can say is that I wish the crowd had been a bit more lively and had come rock out with me front and center! But with a set starting at 8:30PM, and at the Roxy to boot, it's to be a little expected. I hope to see them come back soon!

The second band on the bill, headlining the show, was Southern Death Threat. Man those guys can fucking rock! The vocals, the intruments, the energy - all insanely amazing! Had me dancing and headbanging the whole set. Fortunately for this band, the crowd was a little more into it, which I think really amped up the performance level. During one song, the lead singer, Nick Oszinski, pulled me onto the stage, as the only "hot" female up front, to dance and shake my ass to their sound. It was definitely a memorable performance! I'd recommend everyone to check these guys out on their on-going, cross-Canada tour.

A Supernova Explodes

So Ive never been a fan of Supernova. I've played at three of their shows, and seen countless band get ripped off by them. First off, no money goes back to the bands and at 12 dollars a ticket... that's a lot of money. I know its not cheap to put on a show but some of the productions of the shows just shows you how much money they are putting back... no impressed. Secondly I know at least 2 bands that have "won" the big prize and have yet to receive anything. What is up with that? So that being said, it is a great venue for underage bands to play. Normally all ages show are hard to set up and hard to get a crowd and such. And i know young bands don't know where to turn and don't have the connections to put together a show themselves. But i think another form should come forth. Get rid of this Supernova. But thats just my thoughts.

I only came for a few bands and was shocked when i entered the room. It was full of chairs and people sitting, like a piano concert. I can see why chairs are nice when you have parents who want to watch. But it definitely takes away from the "show" kind of vibe. So first i saw was Community Trees. And indeed tree'sy they were. Sounded good but the whole banjo vibe just wasn't doing it for me. Talented voice, but just there isn't much of a scene out there for this type of music. But who knows, maybe they will create one.

Up next was Plastic Soldiers. Weird name so i didnt know what to expect but they were amazingly talented for their age. I can tell they are jazz influenced. Songs were very progressive but still maintained structure which i enjoyed. My favorite was their final song. Definitely worth to check them out. I could see they were raised on classic rock. Not much hint of modern rock in their sound which was something very pleasant to the ear. Give them another 10 years and they will be amazing!

Split Theory was a whole different beast all together. With a very Avenged Sevenfold vibe they blew the crowd away with their heaviness. I loved seeing shocked faces on some of the older more conservative crowds faces. They had a group of dedicated fans who cheers them on and during their final song rushed the stage and headbanged and moshed. It was the first time I had ever seen moshing at Tom Lee Music hall. The promoters looked fearful as kids pushed each other and danced to Split Theory's crushing riffs. All the musical ideas were there but some songs weren't quite tight yet. I bet once they get their first album recorded at an actual studio the songs will sound amazing. Cant wait to the see the next show.

More Riffing, Less Riots

8 Bands, 1 Amazing Venue, Great sound, Good drinks, plus a great cause means a great night! Thanks to all the bands Depressing, Anion, Abriosis, Weirding, Galgamex, Ancients, Black Wizard, and Titans Eve. Thanks to all the sponsers! Such an epic night of metal! Wasted Wednesday!

Due to work at the studio we ended up late and caught Weirding halfway through their set. Great stoner metal riffs. Nice and sludgy. Nice and full sound. Super tight drumming and very melodic and catchy riffs. Vocals cut through nicely. Each riff building and changing into something new. Sick Band.

Galgamex rocked the stage next, playing their whole set with two guitars, drums and vocals. Very tight riffing. Two amazing shredding guitarists. Just melted faces. The drummer had hair that flew around him like a demon as he wailed on his kit. The singer roamed the stage as if he had ADD and headbanged like a madman. Great stage presence as he roared and screamed and even spit at the crowd. Sadly his vocals were buried under the guitars and you could bearly hear his epic screams.

Ancients had an amazing sound. Very melodic but super heavy. Reminds me a lot of Mastadon. Loved their sound. Great players. Progressive metal but loved it. Perfect bass riffs to keep the feeling. Long vocals over chugging riffs. Not much else to say, super sick band. Be sure to check out the video coming soon. Id love to go see them again.

Black Wizard is one of my favorite Vancouver bands so far. So genuine to their music. They live the life are tales told by greats such as Metallica, Guns N Roses, Motely Crue, such as living on bearly anything for the love of music and epic partiers. Their music reminds me of Black Sabbath mixed with Iron Maiden with hints of Judas Priest in there. But such an Kyuss feel as well. After some minor technical difficulty they started underway. With a new guitarist I hoped they had maintained their sound and was excited to hear they had not only maintained but improved their sound. Heavier, dirtier, with a slightly more shred feel. Good set! I hear after their next show they are going to take a break and write some more! Stoked!

To wrap up the night was Titans Eve. Just having been on a 2 month tour they were ready to rock the home stage for a good sized crowd of dedicated followers. Amazing band. One of Vancouver's tightest metal bands I've seen. Sick riffs, catchy choruses, epic solos, pounding basslines, and.. amazing drumming. As the video is coming showing Casey Ors skills on the skins as he does an amazing drum solo before they launch into "Immortal". Reminds me a bit of Children Of Bodom mixed with Motorhead. Sick Set!

Flavours of Anger

Hardcore is very much alive and kicking in Vancouver and Rose and I were proud to go support the scene at a little known venue called the "W2 Media Cafe". At the name i expected a small venue but was impressed when I entered a huge cavernous room. A decent sized group of fans were moshing to this wall of sound created by the first band. Special thanks to Lynzaii Mae the promoter for having Hammer Records out.

The first band by the name of Anchoress totally blew the lid off that place with their tight energetic riffs and screams. The drums were pounding away as if the world was ending and the crowd agreed and moshed like there was no tomorrow. One of the only local bands on the bill they proved to be a great warm up to the night. Getting the room nice and hot for the bands to follow.

While we were interviewing the first band we missed the start of the set of the next band, Deadbeat, and sadly my camera batteries died so we had to run to the car to get the charger and ended up missing most of the set. The 2nd local Vancouver band. But from what we caught it was super heavy sound. Great players. Sad to have missed most of their set but will be checking them out at their next show!

Keeping up the rage was Molotov Solution played a super sick set. Every band i find has one guy truly committed to the cause and the bassist seem as if his whole life was dedicated to the scene. Slapping his bass like a naughty hooker. The singer put on a great show as he made his rounds up on stage. Even trading off screams with the singer from Anchoress during one song. The crowd received it well and headbanged passionately. Great set.

The last band all the way from down in California were Lionheart. Very dynamic band. The songs sounded very epic and I bet the album sounds amazing. Every member of the band looked like they had lived the scene their whole life. Great stage presence from each band. Really getting the remaining crowd hyped and definitely woke up anyone sleeping in the audience with their bombastic metal. Starting a number of circle pits and the crowd was the most enthusiastic, dancing, punching, moshing, and thrashing like possessed demons. Great way to end the night!

3, 2, 1, LIFTOFF!

Another night at Joe's Apartment! Great venue. Thanks to the sound guy for letting me record his audio as well as live audio. This night 3 rock and roll bands took the stage for a lively Friday night.

Ive seen the grand before at the Cellar Nightclub. It's truly the little things that make a show great, the sound has to be great, the lighting has to be great, and the band has to play great. Sadly this night didn't shine for The Grand. The sound guy was nowhere to be found when they started off their set. The guitars were uneven, the vocals were totally dry (no effects), the kick drum was buried under everything so the sound wasn't the greatest. The lights weren't even turned on. The stage was super dark which made the whole scene look odd. The band played solidly but you could tell they just had a hard time getting into it as their fans were unsure of what to think. Only a few people were up front at the beginning and dwindled off to the sides during their set. From being in a band in know its hard to get into your songs if your fans aren't responding back. Solid set, but not as good as it could have been.

By the end of The Grand's set they had the lights turned on and the sound right just in time for the next band, Between Takes. Ive seen Between Takes before and they didn't fail to disappoint. Catchy licks, solid vocals, great baselines. Some very cool guitar effects. I just wasn't feeling the singer, he sounded almost bored. A very tight band who definitely rocked the stage. The drummer was fanatic though, she looked like she was having the most fun in the world and I loved watching her rock her kit. Id recommend them anytime!

The last band stole the show though. Straight up. Liftoff took things up a whole level. Just stage charisma. Super catchy lyrics and melodies, I found myself singing them after just hearing them once. They had a very Greenday sound which a lot of original flare. An amazing voice, totally on pitch, amazing tone, and lots of emotion. Great harmonies at the perfect times to really add to the songs. Very solid band! The whole band just had so much life and energy through their whole set. I was sad to hear their last song of the night. Go check out this band!

Dancing Is Similar In Every Country

Getting fans from across the country is hard... getting fans from a different country is harder.... but it was a great sized crowd at Joe's Apartment for four amazing ska bands from across the world. Having just got my camera back it took a while to get back into the swing with taking photos/video and trying out my new audio recorder!

Hailing from Montreal ska scene, The Fundamentals, they had a small crowd to warm up but proceeded to just groove out! The guitarist looked like he didn't care if he was playing for 5 people or 500 people. His guitar playing reminds me of Chuck Berry. I was a little disappointed with the female singer. I kept expecting her to warm up to the crowd but she seemed a bit cold. The sound was a very classic old school ska sound. Sounded very east coast, which is understandable, but a new "feel" to me. Sounded great! Very homey kind of a sound.

Which is a total opposite of the next act, one of my personal favorites, Rude City Riot! Taking ska to a whole new level. They call it PowerSka, good old ska with rock infused together to deliver a powerhouse of sound aimed at your ears! Just having released a new album they had a bunch of new tunes ready to rock as well as their usual standards. Each song a new groove, catchy chorus and a unique way at looking at life, love, or kung fu. All around good stage presence with some great little tricks up their sleeve. Be sure to catch them live one day!

The Afterbeat was next. All the way from Winnipeg. Adding a little more edge to ska than I've heard in a while. Small influences of punk mixed in as well this definitely made an interesting combination. Very tight sound. Full of power and piss and ready to take over the world. Very dynamic sound. Wish the guitar either had a couple of effects for the solos or something, sounded a little too empty. Very simple riffs and solos which works but wish it was a bit thicker. Great sounding band though.

The problem with being the headliner is usually people have to go catch the sky train home before 1am. And being out of town and not knowing that happens is even worse. Trying being from out of the country and not knowing! So sadly The Resignators had a small of dedicated ska fans to play too they still rocked as if they were playing a stadium. I was one of the people who had to leave for the sky train but i stayed for as long as i could listening to their fantastic tunes! After I wrapped up the audio gear they played a great Spanish flavoured tune which made my heart soar! Good luck on the rest of the tour!

What Goes Around, Comes Around -

What goes around, comes around. Sound familiar? That would be because everyone and their dogs have heard of, or recognize, the word Karma. So, naturally, local artist Kristen Karma shares the same fate! This young pop/rock artist has a strong following both on Facebook, with 2223 likes, and on Twitter, with 839 followers! (I WISH I had a crazy fan group like that! Wow.) Some of Karma's musical influences, such as Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and the Veronicas, really shine through on her debut 6-song EP, "Destination Unknown."

The first track on the EP is titled, "The Best In Me." Though it's not the best song on the album, it has cute pop vocals, a tight backtrack, and simple but catchy lyrics and melody. The second track is "Bustin' Out." There are strong keys/synths, mixed well with various other instruments to create a great, fun track to dance too. The topic of the song is very relatable, which is something that hooks in the listeners. Though I must say, while all the right ideas are there instrumentally, the vocals need more edge. They're just a tad too soft sounding. Almost like Hilary Duff singing along to an Avril Lavigne track. Not to say it sounds bad in the least, I like it for sure, it would just be that much better with some edge!

The third track is BY FAR the favourite on the EP here at Hammer Records. It's titled, "Maybe Someday." This song has such passion, all the right edge, great emotion, a strong beat, and great vocal effects all throughout - though especially in the chorus! The use of "gang vocals" really adds to the overall sound as well. I really envision this song on a teen-movie soundtrack. It just sounds so sick!!! A definite must-listen!

The fourth track is "Breakaway." Not to be confused with the Kelly Clarkson song, this one has more of a Daughtry vibe. The lyrics are right to the point, which really delivers the message of the song, and there's a nice showcasing of the guitar in the "breakdown" between vocals. There's not much else to say about this track except, again, I can see this being on a movie soundtrack.

The fifth track, titled, "Something More," isn't really giving us all that much more to listen to. A great track, but not as strong as the other five on the album. The gang vocals weren't as strong as in previous songs, and the sound wasn't "as there" over all. Lyrically though, it's fantastic. I really dug the lyrics.

Now, the last song! It is conveniently called, "Goodbye." I wonder if it was placed at the end for that reason? Regardless, it's clever. This song has cute lyrics, and a really strong chorus all around. The soft vocal work works really well in the verses, and there are some fantastic vocal runs throughout the song. It's a strong ending to a fun, dance-y album. One everyone should get there hands on! If not, you never know when karma will come around and get ya!

Halfway To Hollywood

Halfway to Hollywood is right! This local Pop-Rock/PowerPop band from Vancouver, BC gave me the honour of reviewing their brand new, two-song EP, "Speechless," recorded in their private studio in March, and mixed by professional, Steve Klassen (These Kids Wear Crowns, Faber Drive) at the Sound Suite in Abbotsford just recently!

This new band gives off a very feel-good, relatable vibe. They have catchy lyrics and strong melodies and harmonies in both songs, with well put-together, energetic, instrumentals to back them up! Their sound is very Boys Like Girls meets Simple Plan, meets local Vancouver band - Fighting For Ithica. It's a VERY welcoming sound!

The first song, "Speechless," has very cute lyrics, strong vocals, and a catchy melody. Front man, Grant Walker's vocals and guitar are masterfully mixed with fellow band members' bass (Brenden White), keys and synths(Joey Levesque), lead guitar(Jacob Owen), drums(Graeme Hahn), and backing vocals(Brendan White and Jacob Owen). The track reminds me a lot of, "Five Minutes To Midnight," by Boys Like Girls. I could see myself dancing to this at a party, club, or live show any day!

Next up is, "Breakdown." Now, with a name like that, people might think it's going to be another one of those sad songs - but it isn't! This song is a very inspirational, heart-warming piece, with good phrasing and a tight sound. Right off the bat, the song starts on a soft, but major note, and kicks that up a notch thirteen seconds in with some great gang-vocals, and a full-instrument sound! The lyrics are very relatable to people of all ages, especially those going through a rough patch in their lives, who just need a little pick-me-up! (And who hasn't been there? I know I have!) Again, it's just one of those songs I can see myself dancing to all night, or rocking out to at a live show!

Though new to the scene, not having played any shows yet (though planning to either late July or early August), these guys have a strong following both on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/HalfwayToHollywood) with 568 Likes, and on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/HalfwayToHolly), with a whopping 2,945 followers!

More Than Just A Pop Star

If you don't know who Elise Estrada is don't fret. You've probably heard a few of her tunes on the radio or seen her videos on much music. If your not into that music then ok, don't read this review. But she rocks. I have the pleasure of working for RockStar Music Corp which manages Elise Estrada and I get to record her in the studio and work with her on a weekly basis. She is one of the nicest people I've ever met. But she can sure rock a stage.

I had never seen an Elise Estrada show until Canada Day in Surrey. She sang right after The Latency and I didn't know what to expect. I assumed just another pop show, comes out, sings a couple songs, heads home. Her manager Adam H came out on stage and started to pump the crowd up with some cheers and chants. I have never seen anyone get a crowd that excited in any show I've ever been to. So after giving away a few Cds Elise came onto the stage and blasted into her set with some old classics, and new tunes off her new album. Some songs were mashed together so that they flowed into each other and only maybe had a chorus and a verse which was a great idea, kept the flow together but kept things fresh! She was great with the crowd, giving back every bit of attention she was receiving. During a few breaks she gave out a few more free cds and also a ring of hers and a couple bracelets she had on, making sure everyone who received them felt like family. After a great hour set she wrapped it up and thanked all her fans and headed off for a quick break and then going to the merch table to sign autographs.

I was filming the whole show with director Ali Visanji, who directed most of Elise's music videos. But after the show went to the merch tent to film her signing autographs and that was an experience. She made time for every single fan that came up to see her. It was about a 3 hour wait in line to get her to sign something to see her and she made sure to thank every fan, shake their hands, and give them a real smile. That's what i call quality!

She raised my idea about pop stars and how she is a real idol young singers/musicians can look up to and I hope you all can learn something! No matter how big or small you are, always make time for your fans. Without them, what are you doing it for?

Wearing Shades At Night

Joe's Apartment is a prime venue. Great Stage, great sound and if the right band gets on stage its an amazing experience.

Contradictory to their name Hastings sounded great as they opened up the night. An older band with an older more experienced sound. They had a huge crowd for an opening band. Made up of mostly older people but all eyes were glued to the stage. Some great players, talented tight band including a couple brass instruments. Pleasing to the ear, great way to open up the night.

Second up was Aviator Shades who had the biggest crowd of the night. Everyone was up front watching them rock out. Their sound reminds varied between straight rock and some great hard rock tunes with a few hints of metal. Two very talented guitarists traded solos in a few songs each with their own unique flare. Great rock vocals and tight drumming added to the sound. Sadly the bass dropped out after the first few songs and only reappeared during the last song, so for the most part the band was guitar heavy, but when the bass kicked in it was huge. I recorded a song midway through their set and will have the link below so definitely check it out! Great band! Huge improvement from last time i saw them. Cant wait to see their next show.

Aviator Shades Live by HammerRecords

Having heard recordings of the last band I had high hopes for Cause4Drama but must say i was slightly disappointed. The band was super tight, very talented individuals but just wasn't doing it for me. A very bluesy band more than their recordings lead me to believe. Playing a few covers which i didn't not recognize did not help me either. Playing to a seemingly smaller crowd because no one was up front for the band but still the same number of people in the bar. Not much i can say, sounded great, but i just wasn't digging it. Please feel free to go check them out and see what you think.

Wasted Wednesday Is Back!

An epic metal show at the Red Room. Great turn out for a Wednesday night. Special thanks to Asher Media for letting me review the show!

KYMATICA opened up the night. Tight band, heavy sound. But just felt something was missing. Maybe it was an off night, maybe it was just the mix. Amazing shred solos by one of their guitarists. I felt as if the singer/guitarist just practiced a bit more his solo's could have been a bit more dazzling, definitely solid but didn't wow me as some of the other bands did. I think with a little more stage presence they would kick some serious ass.

Alone Against Rome followed up and blew the lid off that place. Amazing guitar work from both guitarists. Lots of great effects. Perfect sweeping harmonies just made my jaw drop. The vocalist made the night though. Amazing stage presence. Just jumped around the stage like a madman on crack. Wished the other members had been as crazy but maybe that will come with time. Great sound. Loved "Stolen Romance" Very melodic. Defiantly watch out for these guys!

I was not expecting what came next. The stage was cleared, a walkway was built and out came this golden bikini glad female with metal kneepads/elbowpads and a chest/stomach plate. Rammstein music started blasting from the speakers and she started her electric grinders! Sparks were flying as she grinded with the music in an amazing show! She did it the entire song and that was it, short and sweet!

Only downside was it took a long time to set up for the last band. Without Mercy rocked the stage and showed me that chicks can out scream guys any day. This band shredded my face off. Sick talent, great song structures and amazing dynamics! Soft to heavy on a dime. They are heading off on tour so best of luck to them! Rock hard!
