Brampton is being represented at Canadian Music Week by New Design. We had a quick chat to them about the upcoming show.
Hammer Records: Tell us what you think of when you think Canadian Music?
New Design: Nothing specific, there's so much different stuff going on here it's hard to pinpoint a signature sound. Collectively our favourite Canadian artists of all-time are Moneen, Alexisonfire and Billy Talent (and probably Rush haha). I feel like the mainstream rock landscape has strayed away from those types of sounds which is unfortunate but if you look at the local level you can find any sound you like which is awesome and there are a lot of great lesser known Canadian acts.
Hammer Records: How did you get involved in Canadian Music Week?
New Design: We just applied, are there other ways to get in haha? (Let us know?).
Hammer Records: What do you have planned for Canadian Music Week?
New Design: We hope to be really involved with CMW, attending panels, and different shows, meeting new people/bands, some of our friend's bands are playing so it should be a lot of fun. As for our showcase we don't have anything particularly special planned, but I think we will stand out because that's just the type of band we think we are. We also started playing this cover (we don't normally do covers), it's not super well known, but if you like the bands we like, you will like it and think it's cool. I mean at least we hope it's kind of one of those songs you don't want to take on and potentially ruin because it's so good but I think we got it.
Hammer Records: What message do you want to send to Canadians listening to your music?
New Design: The message we want to send Canadians listening to our music is I guess that exists although if they are listening they already know that. The main point I'm trying to make is I feel the kind of music we are playing is not so common in Canada especially in comparison to other genres and it's a refreshing alternative to whatever you hear on the radio right now. On a more musical note, we dedicate a lot of time to our writing and won't put something out unless we absolutely love it. There's a lot of depth to the music we write, instrumentally and lyrically, and I feel like every song has something to explore and is worth multiple listens.
Hammer Records: Whats coming up for you?
New Design: Our main goal for the rest of the year is touring, we're trying to sort out some Canadian and potentially U.S dates for the summer. We have a few GTA shows coming up but are working on branching further. We kind of went all in with an album last year so new music will take a while but if you haven't checked it out we would obviously recommend to do so. Not sure if this will be mentioned some where so if not our CMW showcase is Tuesday, May 3rd at Sneaky Dee's and you should definitely come watch us and if you don't like us there will be other bands too so you should be okay.
You can stream/buy the album here https://newdesignmusic.bandcamp.com/album/far-from-home (or literally any other streaming/purchasing outlet you prefer, I'm pretty sure it's on everything).
