Vancouver's own The Tourist Company will be performing this year at Canadian Music Week. We spoke with them about their upcoming show in Toronto.
Hammer Records: Tell us what you think of when you think Canadian Music?
The Tourist Company: I definitely think of legends like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young but we’re pretty excited about the current artist scene in our country. We listen to a lot of Canadian music on our own time, and the creativity coming from our artists right now is inspiring. Current favourites that come to mind are Dear Rouge, Jordan Klassen, We Are The City, Aidan Knight, and Royal Canoe.
Hammer Records: How did you get involved in Canadian Music Week?
The Tourist Company: We were a part of an artist development program in BC called the PEAK Performance Project in 2014 and they emphasized the importance of being a part of what’s happening musically on the national scale. Friends described CMW as a unique amassing of Canadian talent that needed to be experienced so we applied for showcases last year. We were fortunate the get the chance to play and the week we spent was definitely formative for us as a band, returning for CMW 2016 was a no-brainer for us this year. We’re looking forward to seeing what Canadian music culture is doing this year.
Hammer Records: What do you have planned for Canadian Music Week?
The Tourist Company: We have designed a new show for our upcoming tour that incorporates our new material and soundscape in a way that emphasizes our growth from last year. Our upcoming record is a concept album that expresses our life as a band though the events of the Space Race so we will be featuring some visuals that will help take the audience to the space our music comes from. Expect big rhythm sections, catchy pop melodies, and quiet intimate moments to make tie everything together.
Hammer Records: What message do you want to send to Canadians listening to your music?
The Tourist Company: Thanks for being patient with us while we’ve been finishing our new material! We’re really passionate about the new direction the band is taking, and we’re really grateful that people take time out of their lives to listen to the art we create. The EP is just step one! Stay tuned for the full length album hopefully coming out this fall (fingers crossed!)
Hammer Records: Whats coming up for you?
The Tourist Company: Our new EP “Mercury” will be out on April 29th on Spotify, iTunes, and Apple Music etc. We’ll be touring across Canada on our way home from CMW so follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram (or check out our shiny new website) to see all the details.
