Me And Mae are on the front lines of Country, battling to bring Vancouver on the map for Country artists. Having a slew of awards, radio play, and tons of tours under their belt, the band is one of Vancouver's top acts that are emerging on the festival scene. We had a quick chat with Shawn from the band about what Country means to them.

Hammer Records: What does Country music mean to you?

Hammer Records: How does it feel to be nominated for an award? What do you think made you stand out?
Shawn: it's very humbling... Not sure really, don't do it to be awarded but it sure is nice to get the recognition from the industry.

Hammer Records: What do you have coming up in the future for your fans?
Shawn: brand new songs and a big announcement ... Stay tuned!!

Hammer Records: Do you think there are enough venues playing country music? What do you want to say to the fans of country music?
Shawn: I think the Vancouver club scene is become more supportive of live country. To the fans we say THANK YOU!!

Hammer Records: What other artists in the genre do you look up to?
Shawn: we love the Eagles, Zach Brown band and Tim McGraw to name a few.

Hammer Records: What advice do you have for country artists that are just starting out?

Todd Richard - BCCMA Nomination

TV star and country artist Todd Richard is used to the spotlight. We had a nice chat with Todd about his newest BCCMA nomination.

Hammer Records: How does it feel to be nominated for an award? What do you think made you stand out?
Todd Richard: To be nominated is incredible as there is quite a deep pool of talent and BC so to be included is very humbling. My hope is that the songs on our new album made us stand out as the music has a very traditional country feel to it.

Hammer Records: What do you have coming up in the future for your fans?
Todd Richard: Along with a very busy fall season of shows upcoming, I have been working with CCMA nominated producer Jeff Johnson (Bailey Way Ent) on project "Follow Your Heart"  Jeff and I co-wrote this song to be released to benefit Variety the Children's Charity and is to be produced in a "We are the World" type fashion w a star studded Canadian line up of artists singing on. The song will be released Dec 15th and will be followed by a video documenting the making of the song. The hope is that this song will help a lot of kids and familys.

Hammer Records: Do you think there are enough venues playing country music? What do you want to say to the fans of country music?
Todd Richard: I don't think there's been quite as many venues supporting country music or any other genre for awhile now which makes things a little tougher to get your music in front of fans. Not sure the reason but it feels as though there's a shift and it's possibly changing. As for myself if we can't find somewhere to play we go out and make our own show and have been lucky to also have my hometown of Harrison Hot Springs support us and put many shows on locally thru out the year.

Hammer Records: What other artists in the genre do you look up to?
Todd Richard: It's tough to just name one artist but ok here goes lol
I worked w Rick Tippe on my last album and along with being a long time fan I have always looked up to him and been in awe of how pro an artist he has been by not only being a great performer, singer and songwriter but a smart business guy also, along with being such a nice guy.  Gord Bamford, Johnny Reid, Deric Ruttan , George Canyon are all top notch guys that inspire me daily also.. There's so many.

Hammer Records: What advice do you have for country artists that are just starting out?
Todd Richard: Keep learning always and if music is your passion than giving up is never an option. A very successful guitar player said to me years ago that He thought that I had what it took but that there are no guarantees and that as long as I always kept the music in my life it would be a happy life.. And he was right, I couldn't imagine not having music

Ben Klick - BCCMA Nomination

Being nominated for awards is not something Ben Klick is foreign of. Through his excellent career he's received many pieces of recognition. We had a quick chat with Ben about what country really means to him.

Hammer Records: What does Country music mean to you?
Ben: The country music scene is one massive, supportive family. As an artist, songwriter, and musician in the country music industry, it’s an incredible feeling to be able to share my experiences through music to audience members. One of the coolest things is how country music has such a vast audience. I love to tell stories, and country music allows me to reach out and connect with those audience members.

Hammer Records: How does it feel to be nominated for an award? What do you think made you stand out?
Ben: There is so much talent in the community, and in other cities and provinces. To be nominated for an award, alongside friends, family, and other artists, musicians, and industry professionals that I look up to, is an unreal feeling. The band and I are honoured to be listed beside so much talent in the British Columbia Country Music Association (BCCMA)!
Our bands performances are fun, interactive, and high energy. We take pride in our social media and online presence, and love to take the time after shows to talk to and meet anyone in the crowd who would like to come say hi. Over the last year, I’ve travelled back and forth to Nashville recording our sophomore EP that was released in September of 2015 with 3 debut singles out to Canadian Country Radio; one which made it into the Top 100 of the Canadian TRAX Charts earlier this year.

Hammer Records: What do you have coming up in the future for your fans?
Ben: Throughout the Fall and Winter months, the band and I will be working on new music (including writing and recording), as well as working on and developing new set lists of songs for shows moving forward into the Spring and Summer performance season. We are looking at releasing a new single in early 2017, and will be looking into getting onto the Country Music Festival circuit and reaching out to provinces outside of BC in the new year.

Hammer Records: Do you think there are enough venues playing country music? What do you want to say to the fans of country music?
Ben: Without the fans who come out to every show, and support each of their favourite artists, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love to do. It’s because of the fans that we get to live our dreams, tell stories, connect with people, and play music.
Country Music is rapidly growing. There’s so much variety. Country Music allows artists to be themselves. There are lots of venues who play and support country music and all of the artists involved in the genre. I like to listen to and support music of all types. The music scene is constantly expanding, and as long as there are places to play music, the scene will be alive and well!

Hammer Records: What other artists in the genre do you look up to?
Ben: My first inspiration in Country Music was Shania Twain. I was 4 years old when I saw her as my first concert. I had a little purple microphone and a plastic guitar I used to dance around with, and at the concert, I had my eyes glued on her guitar player. This got me started on my path through music. Once I moved to the Okanagan, I started listening to Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. Being a guitar player, I was quickly inspired by their playing styles and wanted to be able to play like them. In our live shows, we play everything from John Denver and Merle Haggard to The Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban, as well as play our own original music, both released and unreleased.
On a side note, other influences include Canadian Folk Band, Great Big Sea, and I grew up listening to the Top 40 pop, and classic rock stations.

Hammer Records: What advice do you have for country artists that are just starting out?
Ben: Over the years, I have had industry professionals, artists, and musicians, as well as college professors and mentors share experiences, stories, and give me advice and guidance. Each conversation and piece of advice I am very grateful for. A few of the ones that stuck out include:

“There is no recipe to success. All I know to be true is ‘Talent, Commitment, Sacrifice, and Attitude’” - Brett Kissel

“Don’t Stop. There will be times you feel the ‘ball stop rolling’, or feel as if you aren’t getting any further along your career path, however, don’t let it get you down. Keep your head up, and keep pushing forward.”  - Corey Bell - Okanagan College Professor (Audio Engineering and Music Production)

Lastly, believe in yourself. Write what is true to you, and follow your gut.

Hammer Records: What are your social media links and where can people find you?

Ben: The band and I are all over social media! You can find us at the following links:

Russian atmospheric/depressive black metal band TAIGA are now streaming their first single '?????' off their upcoming album 'Sky' set for release on September 16th via Satanathc Records sub label Symbol of Domination. The album tells the story about those moments in life when people are aware of their own insignificance and can not overcome the emotional pain. TAIGA was founded in the Siberian city of Tomsk by Nikolai Seredov from the thrash band "??????????" (Stakhanovtsi) and the funeral doom band "Funeral Tears" along with Andrey Chernov, guitarist of the military/martial industrial metal band "Panzertank". In December 2013, they released their first two songs, "?? ??????" and "?? ????? ??????", which marked the beginning of the project. People suffering from mental disorders caused by public misunderstanding, undivided love and their own weakness are the main influence in TAIGA's lyrics. In January 2014, TAIGA released their the first EP called "?? ??? ??? ??????" (You Are Still Breathing), which was immediately followed by another EP in February 2014, entitled "???? ? ?????" (Ashen To Ashen). With great feedback on their EPs, TAIGA revealed their debut full length "Ashen Light" during March 2014. The album featured new arranged tracks from the first two EPs and was co-released by labels Satanath Record, Metallic Media and and Le Crépuscule Du Soir Productions. In 2015, they released their second album "Gaia" via labels Symbol Of Domination and Metallic Media. In 2016, band recruited Aleksey "Satanath" Korolyov as their keyboardist/ambient sound maker to add to their mystic atmosphere. Quick Note: Andrei Chernov was not involved in the recording of the new album 'Taiga', but is still involved as a member of the band.
