Make History Talent Search - Ten Minute Detour

This indie garage band, Ten Minute Detour, are spreading their music across Canada! We had a quick chat with them about the Make History Talent Search.

Hammer Records: When you think of Jim Beam, what comes to mind? Any crazy Jim Beam stories?
Ten Minute Detour: I think bourbon, and I think Kentucky. As far as crazy stories with Jim Beam, I'm sure there are a bunch that I can't recall, which could be a good thing, or not. We drove down to Nashville to record our latest album with ex-Cage the Elephant guitarist, Lincoln Parish. I can vividly remember driving through Kentucky in October and admiring the trees and thinking how beautiful the landscape was, which led me to even include 'The Derby' in one of our new songs.

Hammer Records: What do you think of battle of the band competitions? Do they help or hinder the local music scene?
Ten Minute Detour: We like to not like them. I think most bands aren't too fond of them. They're all quite different but there's always a sense that politics are in play, which is a part of everyday life I guess. Some competitions focus on making money, which is bullshit, because the bands who work hard selling tickets and getting people in the door, often see little to nothing in return. It's just tough to say 'this band is better than that band', when there are so many kickass artists all working their asses off to make a splash. That said, often bands are looking for exposure, and these come down to that. Not who's the best, but who's going to play in front of a new crowd, who's going to get new listeners.

Hammer Records: What do you think makes the Calgary music scene different and stand out compared to the rest of Canada? When people think Calgary they think country.
Ten Minute Detour: Sure there's a lot of incredible folk and country artists, some of the best. What some people don't know is that there is this cool rocknroll, underground indie, beer-soaked punk scene that sees some awesome bands play on any given night. All it takes is one Wednesday night out at Broken City where you can find Rockin’ for dollars, a game show themed night, where up to 10 bands perform to spin a wheel of awesomeness, all for a $3 cover. The best part is, anyone can play!! It's a super tight knit community of musicians who are interested in supporting each other, and we've got some awesome festivals such as Sled Island, The Big Winter classic, among others, that see more eclectic Canadian bands. We also have the National Music Centre, which makes us the music capitol of Canada, no?

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Ten Minute Detour: Pick an artist that is tenacious and relevant in today's music scene, determined to pursue their craft, will work towards a global reach and further promote the Canadian music scene. Choose the artist who is marketable, determined, and willing to make this their career.

Make History Talent Search - The Nursery

Toronto favorites, The Nursery, is bringing their eargasmic tunes to the world.  We spoke to the band about their thoughts on the Jim Beam Make History Talent Search.

Hammer Records: When you think of Jim Beam, what comes to mind? Any crazy Jim Beam stories?
The Nursery: At first, I think hmm...'Jim Beam', must be some cosmic cowboy with a raygun. Jimmy Beam! Quickest scoundrel on this side of the galaxy. But this Jim, he's different. He came from southern Kentucky, made some bourbon, and wants you to know about it.

Hammer Records: What do you think of battle of the band competitions? Do they help or hinder the local music scene?
The Nursery: Competitions set up precedents for a winner and loser. It's not productive to essentially name artists as "losers" in a purely subjective field. However, I feel healthy competition does often inspire more grit and determination to rise up to a challenge, wherein handouts from friends or peers don't encourage anything. We rather be challenged to better and prove ourselves rather than rest on laurels of unconditional support. Competitions need to be on top of how they are run and made sure they are inspiring hard work and not running a glorified popularity contest.

Hammer Records: What do you think makes the Toronto music scene different and stand out compared to the rest of Canada?
The Nursery: Toronto has probably the most culturally diverse community of performers. Where else can you find singer-songwriters, hip-hop voices, folk artists, rock bands, punks, metal musicians and DJ's performing within blocks from each other? It's a melting pot of genres, experiments, and ideas.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
The Nursery: Cultivate and spot truly unique talent when you can. You're the seasoned industry vet right? We all need authenticity more than ever right now. Don't make it a popularity contest or make a decision based off a trending flavor of the month (or year). You know better. Take a risk. Discover the new Bjork, Bowie or Cobain. Not the ones who emulate them. They'll be the kids who are a little rougher around the edges. Who didn't rehearse every word and movement. There's so much locked up inside them they often don't know how to wield their powers. They need your guidance and vision!

Make History Talent Search - Good Kid

Computer Science brought them together, but music binds them together. We had a great chat with GOOD KID about their shot at the Make History Talent Search.

Hammer Records: When you think of Jim Beam, what comes to mind? Any crazy Jim Beam stories?
Good Kid: Once while the band was on tour in Budapest, we were  overtaken by a gang of bandits, they held us at gunpoint while they riffled through what little we had in our van, taking all that was valuable. It wasnt until they found the single bottle of Jim Beam® Double Oak we had stashed away in the glove box that they had a change of heart. It seems that although they were hard done by and had turned to a life of crime to make ends meet, the realization that we too enjoyed the intense caramel and toffee flavors of Jim Beam's finest, made the act of theft all to real. What started out as robbery turned into a friendship that night, and we keep in touch with the gang to this day.

Hammer Records: What do you think of battle of the band competitions? Do they help or hinder the local music scene?
Good Kid: In general we're not really a fan of the battle of the bands type shows. Typically they're run by promotion companies built to take advantage of bands. The bands playing don't get paid but they get pressure to sell tickets, you play for "exposure" which is very rarely a good thing. There's a lot of scam type organizations in Toronto that run these things so you need to be careful. 

That being said Make History Talent Search did a great job. There was no charge at the door, we were treated really well, there was no pressure put on us from the promoters, and we got to play with some amazing bands in front of a ton of people. If all the battle of the bands that happened were like this one then I would say they're amazing for the local music scene.

Hammer Records: What do you think makes the Toronto music scene different and stand out compared to the rest of Canada?
Good Kid: The music scene stands out for the same reason that the city stands out from not only other cities in Canada but the rest of the world, we're one of the most diverse cities out there. There's so many different voices in Toronto, and you can enjoy them all, borrow from them and create things with a wide array of influences.

CBC Searchlight - The Fig & The Flame

We spoke with the Calgary musicians about their thoughts on the CBC Searchlight contest. This duo are spreading their brand of folk music across Canada.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Searchlight Contest?
The Fig & The Flame: It is! Our friends have entered in previous years and we've witnessed the incredible community building aspect of being involved; learning about other Canadians in the same boat as us, hearing their tunes, and sharing one of ours. Win or no win, entering this year was a no-brainer for us!

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
The Fig & The Flame: A two-week song-writing workshop would be incredible, and with a mentor present, we could really learn to capitalize on our strengths and grow where we're weak. As emerging artists, any kind of word-of-mouth momentum and funding would make a huge difference. To be recognized among all of these insanely talented acts would mean so much to us, and make such a difference in our journey as a band.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
The Fig & The Flame: If a blues singer and a Celtic nymph walked into a bluegrass bar and ordered a folk tune pint, and the bartender poured a delicious brew of cascading harmonies, it might be a The Fig & The Flame tune.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
The Fig & The Flame: Hundred Lips is a "tough love" kind of song. It's a call to the act of loving one another on a global level. It was written before some of the most notable volatile developments took place in North America in recent months, but seems like something worthy of sharing at this moment.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
The Fig & The Flame: First we'd say thanks for having a listen, we hope you enjoyed! We hope you find what we have to say relevant and the sound of our music fresh!

CBC Searchlight - Claire Ness

We had a nice chat with Claire Ness about her entry into this years CBC Searchlight contest. Hailing from Whitehorse, shes bringing her unique brand of Folk-Jazz-Blues-Swing-Country to the rest of Canada.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Claire: This is my third time entering Searchlight. This is by far the most stressful time I entered Searchlight. Haha! I have a 10 month old baby now, and I was preparing for the release of my new album "On the Trail". Added to that was the fact I don't have the internet right now so I ended up parked outside my friend's house at -30C, hijacking her internet while the baby slept in the back, in order to upload my video for the deadline. I had almost given up, but then my umpteenth try finally worked! All to say, getting past all the obstacles made this year felt like the first time.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Claire: Wow. Well they are all such incredible prizes. I think I am most excited about the Banff residency. Although, a shitload of money and equipment is always appreciated too.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Claire: Country meets jazz cabaret. Roots Ragtime. Bluesy folk.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Claire: I chose my song "Waffle Boarding" - a hockey themed song - because I felt like it would reach out to the bulk of Canadians eh! Plus it's just such a fun little video.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Claire: I am grateful for the opportunity to have my work seen and heard nationally. And thank you for choosing me as one of the TOP 10 from the North!

Make History Talent Search - The Ruffled Feathers

Jim Beam teamed up with Canadian Music Week to find some of the best talent in the country. We spoke with The Ruffled Feathers about their upcoming show at the Roxy.

Hammer Records: When you think of Jim Beam, what comes to mind? Any crazy Jim Beam stories?
The Ruffled Feathers: When I think Jim Beam I think bourbon, which makes me think old fashions and whiskey sours. No crazy stories really, just a liquor cabinet that is getting too small because I have a lot of curiosity when it comes to making nice drinks.

Hammer Records: What do you think of battle of the band competitions? Do they help or hinder the local music scene?
The Ruffled Feathers: Battle of the Bands can be a lot of fun. It's a great way to get to know and connect with more artists. Every contest is different and the opportunities they create can make a difference for a lot of artists. I think they can be especially useful for new artists.

Hammer Records: What do you think makes the Vancouver music scene different and stand out compared to the rest of Canada?
The Ruffled Feathers: Vancouver has a lot of talent and the community just keeps getting stronger. There is a lot of outreach when it comes to music education and supporting artists with the tools and skills needed to succeed. We haven't had much of a chance to play elsewhere in Canada. BC is really when it comes to our music.

Hammer Records: What do fans have to look forward to in your performance on Thursday? Anything special? New songs? Surprises?
The Ruffled Feathers: We have a new full length album coming out early this summer. We'll be doing three songs from that recording.

CBC Searchlight - Prescilla

We chatted with Toronto musician Prescilla about her entry into the CBC Searchlight Contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Prescilla: Last year was the first time. I entered in my first single LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B23WjNnplM

This year, I entered  I LOVED YOU, off my debut album MUSIC THERAPY which I self produced.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Prescilla: I'm most excited about the opportunity, not so much about the prizes. The opportunity to be seen and heard by the amazing artist panel is  an honour, sincerely!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Prescilla: Prescilla Una is mix of Alanis Morestte, Lana Del Ray m Jewel and Modonna

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Prescilla: I lOVED YOU is a great example of my music arrangements. This song has two separate movements that complement my story telling and singing. Also, the Director and I really laboured over the visuals to match the song writing and feel. This is a hit in my eyes!

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Prescilla: I've been in music since I was a kid, professionally since 2012. I'm an indie solo artist with enough skills and talents to not only help myself, but help other indie artists to succeed. I've organized events specifically in the Toronto indie community so that we al grow together in the scene. I feel its time for me to level up in my career, I'm READY! Thank you for taking the time to hear my music and to learn about  me and my life story in music.

CBC Searchlight - Aiden Myers

Hailing from Toronto, we had a brief chat with Aiden Myers about his entry into this years CBC Searchlight Contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Aiden: Yes, This is the first year I have entered, and I'm so happy I had a finished product to submit. I think it's amazing that CBC is giving all of us emerging songwriters and musicians a chance to really get a leg up, and push our careers forward.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Aiden: The prize i'm most excited for is for sure, is the trip to banff. I think it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to surround myself with canada's most talented people, in canada's most magical location. I Think there's so much inspiration out there, especially surrounded by so much beauty and art. And to get to spend 10 days there? I would be happy with 10 hours. so thats forsure what stands out to me!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Aiden: I describe my music as a crossover genre between pop, pop/rock and hints of modern country. Think 2006 John mayer, mixed with Hedley, and keith urban.

my songs are true to me. I also tie in catchy hooks, along with powerful lyrics to captivate anyone who lends and ear to my art.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Aiden: This song, Keep My sweater is the first single I have released worldwide. Besides for that, I picked it because the whole story behind it is true, and means alot to me. its about that girl thats gone, but no matter what you'll always care for that person. That being said, I just felt that it was the right tune to submit, because I know a lot of people would be able to relate to it, and share what I felt and what I'll always feels for that one special someone I had in my life.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Aiden: Honestly that I think there's so many amazing artists in this competition, and i'd just wish them luck on trying to pick the best ones to move forward (cause I know I would have a hard time deciding that hahah). But seriously There's no reason why I personally deserve this, obviously I want to win, everyone wants to win, But every last person in this competition is working just as hard to get to that place I want to be in.

CBC Searchlight - Dylan Holton

We had a great chat with Dylan Holton about his entry into this years CBC Searchlight Contest. His long resume of accomplishments has proven that Dylan has lived more life than most his age.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Dylan: This is the first I’ve entered the CBC Spotlight Contest. I’ve been on tour most of my career so now that I have some more down time, it’s nice to enter rewarding contests such as this one.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Dylan: After taking  look at the projects, I guess it’s safe to say I’d be most excited about the Career Booster Kit. One of the biggest money makers for me over the years has been selling physical copies of albums while on tour. But in reality, I was always interested where my music would take me if on top of sales, I had real in depth marketing strategies practiced with my work. I love the music and performing live the most, but I have a strong passion for the business side of the music too.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Dylan: This is always a tough question for any independent artist. I’ve been compared to a lot of main stream acoustic pop artists like Mraz or Sheeran, so I guess I’d just have to describe it as easy listening and inspirational. I write a little bit of everything so I like the listener to take the music as they please and categorize it themselves.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Dylan: Actually my sisters, Mom & Dad have mentioned this contest in the past. They felt my song “Yes She Does” had the best chance. It’s had some recognition in the past as some of my other songs, but I’m hoping someone hears potential in this song and maybe would like to explore the option of using it, or digging deeper into some of my songwriting. I liked the video for this as well because it was the first time I went all out doing a 100% independent video. I think it turned out pretty fun.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Dylan: If I could reach out to the judges I’d let them know that if they considered me to be one of the finalists for this contest, they would have one of the hardest working and most passionate singer/songwriters on hands. Hopefully I can tell them personally in the near future.

CBC Searchlight - Stan Simon

We had a few words with long time musician, Stan Simon, about this years entry into the CBC Searchlight contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Stan: No, I've entered twice before. I think it's a great contest and an equally great platform for people to hear new music and for musicians to spread their own.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Stan: Nothing in particular. I think I would be humbled to win anything. Mostly, I'd like to gain new listeners and meet new folks along the way.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Stan: I attempt to make my listeners feel like part of a scene in a film, adhering to a dark theatrical tone shaped from traditional genres.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Stan: It's new and I have a video for it. Plus, I think it's a good tune!

CBC Searchlight - Venus Syndrome

We spoke with Adam, creator of Venus Syndrome, about his entry into the CBC Spotlight contest this year and this thoughts on the contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Adam: I entered my song 'Mistakes' from an independently released album called 'Songs From the Ending Road' in 2015.  That was my first Searchlight entry. 

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Adam: Though all of the prizes sound amazing - notably the support they would provide to the winners' music careers and aspirations - I'd have to say the commission of a new song at the Banff Centre would have to the the highlight for me.  The creative process is something I really enjoy.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Adam: My music sounds a bit 'retro', sort of 70s-ish, perhaps due to my preference for piano-based writing, which is still a bit unusual today.  I also have a pretty organic sound inspired by straight use of the guitar/piano, bass/drums mix, with occasional leads.  Perhaps organic, retro indie pop/rock.  That's a mouthful, though.  Needs tweaking.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Adam: I wrote the song 'Closing That Prison Down' when the closure of the maximum-security prison Kingston Penitentiary was announced.  KP looms large in Kingston's story, and is a part of the town, like an elephant in our collective room.  I wrote it after taking one of the first rare tours a few years ago, and it stuck with me.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Adam: I hope you like songs that tell stories, and try to resonate with communities by connecting people through shared stories.  As a songwriter, after having written a rare song that I feel achieves this, I feel like I've written something special that needs to be shared.  I hope you agree!

CBC Searchlight - Michael Fabro

Having traveled the world in pursuit of music, we managed to have a few words with Michael Fabro about his entry into the CBC Spotlight contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?

Michael: Yes, it’s the first year I’ve submitted.  This year I feel I have something that needed to be shared!

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Michael: I think more than anything the biggest prize is national exposure.  It’s so difficult to break through as an artist and this competition provides a great platform to do so.  That being said, a two-week song-writing residency in Banff is something I’d jump on in a heartbeat.  To focus on writing alongside some great mentors in an ideal environment would be invaluable!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?

Michael: Pop, Singer-Songwriter with a bohemian twist.  Imagine an acoustic pop artist playing a flamenco guitar and adding subtle elements of Spanish guitar fusion within a very accessible pop sound.  That’s the music I make.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Michael: This piece of music is real, raw and honest.  There’s no hiding behind the writing, it’s an expression of unrequited love and a story that I lived. I moved to Barcelona for two years to study a Masters in classical music and while I was there I met a local girl.  The way that I felt about that relationship led me back to song writing, as I felt it was the only way to properly channel my emotions back into my music.  I think beyond that, at some point or another, many of us have gone through a similar experience.  “Waking Up Alone” is universally relatable and I hope that it connects with people and their own individual experiences.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Michael: I think all I can do is send a message of thanks! There are 1200 submissions that a highly talented panel of industry professionals are objectively sorting through.  I think Searchlight is an unbiased, original music competition that isn’t involved in music industry politics.  It’s about the writing and the music and it takes an incredible amount of time, energy and patience to give every submission a fair chance. I have nothing but gratitude for all the judges involved and for providing their expertise.

CBC Searchlight - Sarah Jickling And Her Good Bad Luck

We had a nice chat with Sarah Jickling (former lead singer of the Oh Wells), about her entry into the CBC Spotlight and her thoughts on the contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Sarah: This is the first time I've entered the CBC Searchlight Contest. I generally tend to stay away from voting contests. I've been in a band since I was in high school, and I think after seven years your friends and family don't have a lot of energy to be voting every day. But I thought, I've got a new solo project, a new single, and my first solo album won't be out until June, so why not see what happens?

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Sarah: I would be very excited to perform at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto. Live performance is my happy place, where I'm not worrying about mistakes I've made in the past or how I'm going to handle things in the future. And of course, the opportunity to perform in front of a brand new audience is always exciting. You never know who will be in the crowd!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Sarah: Maybe...."Light hearted pop with heavy things to say." I've also been described as Regina Spektor meets Lorde with an Amanda Palmer attitude, for those who prefer music references.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Sarah: My single "Valentine" was released on World Bipolar Day, and is in reference to my struggles with bipolar disorder. It's an ode to those people in my life, and in the lives of every person living with a mental illness, who never leave. I directed and edited the video myself with the help of my boyfriend at the Vancouver Public Library, and I'm pretty proud of it. Arthur wasn't kidding when he said "having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card."

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Sarah: If I were to win, the real prize would be reaching more people who connect with my music. I work with Reach Out Psychosis, a group that travels to high schools educating teenagers on mental health through music and dance. When I meet these kids and have an opportunity to help them get through things that I've already gone through, I am reminding why I decide again and again to choose this challenging career. I have something to say, and I want to say it to all those people out there who need to hear it.

CBC Searchlight - Luna Li

We spoke with the garage rock princess of Toronto, Luna Li, about her entry into this years CBC Spotlight contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Luna Li: Yes, this is our first time!

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Luna Li: We are most excited about the chance to play at the CBC Music Festival in the summer; we love to play outdoors and would like to get on as many music festival bills as we can this summer.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Luna Li: Our music is dreamy indie rock, female centric/girl power vibes, with a mix of distorted guitar and layered violin loops.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Luna Li: We picked our Southern Souls video because it's a fun, professionally shot video that showcases our live performance and energy.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Luna Li: We would just say thanks for your consideration and for being involved on CBC's panel; we love the diversity of people, music and culture that CBC showcases and would be excited to be a part of that if we were chosen.

CBC Searchlight - Megan Anne

We had a nice chat with Megan Anne, a singer-songwriter from Barrie Ontario, about her entry into the CBC Spotlight Contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Megan: This is my second year entering into the CBC Searchlight contest.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Megan: This is a difficult question, because all of the prizes offered would be incredibly valuable in helping build my career. With that being said my top two would be the Canadian Musician Career Booster kit, and the opening slot at the CBCMusic Festival in Toronto. The Career Booster kit would be amazing because it includes studio time and distribution, which would be very helpful. The festival slot would be phenomenal because in my heart I am a performer. Performance is one of my favourite aspects of music, and to have the opportunity to do so alongside musicians that I admire would be absolutely incredible.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Megan: My music holds a sort of indie-acoustic-pop vibe. I like to write catchy melodies and authentic lyrics. My voice has been compared by listeners to Amy Winehouse, Halsey, and Hayley Williams. I’m extremely flattered (although I’m not sure I believe them.) In addition to those artists, I’m influenced by Marianas Trench, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, and Scott Helman. I like to think if you put all of their music in a blender you’d get something close to me.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Megan: For the CBC Searchlight contest I entered my original song “I Want You To Know.” I picked this song for a variety of reasons. For one, I think it’s accessible, because it’s short and danceable. Additionally, I was able to submit both the radio-ready recorded version as well as a recent live video. I wanted to share my live performance because I think that being able to perform and sing live is very important for a musician.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Megan: That I’m willing to work hard! I didn’t enter this contest on a whim, I entered because I want to be a professional musician. I’m currently studying at York University to get my BFA in Music. I’ve been singing my whole life. Right now I am very much a DIY musician – writing all my own songs, booking all my gigs, maintaining my website and all of my social media, right down to designing my business cards. I’d love a chance to sit down and talk with any of the judges or industry panelists on how to further my career. (Additionally, the judge Dan Kanter is a York U Alumni, and I’d love to chat about the best places to get food on campus.)

CBC Searchlight - Zonnis

We had a quick chat with Zonnis about entering the CBC Spotlight contest and wanted to learn their thoughts on the contest.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Zonnis: This is our second time entering Searchlight

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Zonnis: We are most excited about any of the live performance prizes

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Zonnis: The music of Zonnis is an eclectic mix of original songs that we call "Cabaret Folk", drawing on many genres from rock to country to musical theatre. Songs are written about our personal lives as well as the times we live in. With a repertoire of over 80 songs, each live show is unique, tailored to the specific audience.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Zonnis: It is the best-produced video and song that we have, so we want people to see it. As well, the song fully captures our message of peace, love and good times.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Zonnis: My, my you guys all look great today!

CBC Searchlight - Fake James

We had a quick chat with Fake James about his entry into the CBC Spotlight contest and their thoughts on it.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Fake James: First time with this project. I entered a few years ago as my old band "The Ensemble" with our track "Squared".

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Fake James: I am very excited at the opportunity to travel out East and network with the professionals there. The residency at Banff would also be a true privilege!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Fake James: My music is a style I like to call "hypnotic folk".  I combine elements of organic indie rock with very chill electronic undertones.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Fake James: I am very proud of both the content of the song, lyrically and structurally, and the overall quality of the production (video and audio-wise). The lyrics come from a very personal journey of mine, having unfolded over several years, telling an elaborate story. The simple combination of grand piano and electronic drums seems to find a perfect medium between the genres of dark folk and R&B.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Fake James: Thank you so much for your thorough consideration.  I hope you listen carefully to the depth of passion behind my voice, and to the coherence of our performance.  

I am very grateful to have worked with talented friends of mine in filming and bouncing a well-produced live audio/video take.  

In comparison to most other videos, I would insist that our production carries a superior artistic and professional tone throughout.

CBC Searchlight - Rosy Cervantes y La Sana Rabia

Bringing her brand of Mexican Blues Rock music to the world, Rosy Cervantes entered the CBC Spotlight and we managed to have a quick chat with her.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you've entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Rosy: Yes.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Rosy: Certainly I'm excited, and the band is excited for every chance to play before a large new audience. The Grand Prize is certainly the most exciting of all. We've never seen the Canadian Rockies, and the reputation of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is unparalleled. 

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Rosy: World Fusion!

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Rosy: My original song "El inmigrante" ("The Immigrant") reflects a collective experience told with humor and to which many newcomers to Canada can relate. The message, finally, is the realization you've found a new place you call "home," in a productive way, creativity intact, rising to meet the challenges that come with changing countries.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Rosy: “I believe that songs, in their most intimate sense, have the characteristic of uniting. Music invites peaceful coexistence and integrates cultures. In the year of Canada's 150th birthday, my song is a mirror in which newcomers and long time immigrants see ourselves reflected, which also reflects the positivism implicit in facing challenges and overcoming obstacles. The chorus — "Look to your centre, your heart will light the way… Look to your centre, take it on! Yes!"—speaks to the mutual rewards inherent in our contributions.”—Rosy Cervantes and La Sana Rabia

CBC Searchlight - Anna Klein

Anna Klein is spreading her music from Saskatchewan, having just released a new music video she also has entered the CBC Spotlight contest. We spoke briefly to her about her entry into the competition.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you’ve entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Anna: Yes, this is my first time entering.

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Anna: All of the prizes in this competition are incredible. I think a professional recording session would be unreal, as I’ve had little studio experience. Being given the chance to perform to larger audiences would also be amazing! Performing is unlike anything else for me, and it’s something I want to do a lot more of.

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?
Anna: My music is a unique mix of indie, alternative, and ambient/electronic. It’s pretty lyrical, as well as easy listening.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Anna: I chose my song “Innocence”, from my EP that was released in December 2016 titled “Innocence”. This song is very meaningful, and the lyrics carry a theme to what this past year has been for me. I know this song in particular has touched others as well, and it’s something that I am really proud of.

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Anna: To the judges of CBC Searchlight, I would like to say thank you so much for the opportunity to share my music, as well as getting to discover other aspiring Canadian artists. It would be an incredible honour to succeed in this competition. For as long as I can remember, music has played such a significant role for me. It continues to impact me as I grow, and I know I want to pursue it for the rest of my life. Ultimately, I would love further opportunity to help others with music like so many artists have done for me. Over the years I have come to know just how powerful music is, and it would be a privilege to be a source of something so wonderful and reach a larger audience. I am so excited to be a part of this competition, and I look forward to what the future holds!

CBC Searchlight - Norine Braun

Norine Braun brings her unique blend of worldly pop, jazz, and blues to the CBC Spotlight Contest. We spoke with Norine about her entry.

Hammer Records: Is this the first time you've entered into the CBC Spotlight Contest?
Norine: No this is the third or fourth time I am persistent

Hammer Records: Which of the prizes are you most excited about?
Norine: Wow the 10 Day residency in Banff would be the dream!

Hammer Records: How would you describe your music to a brand new listener?

Norine: The song entered is a blues gospel styling however my main style of
writing is varied from bluesy roots rock to ambience and jazz.

Hammer Records: What made you pick the piece of music/video to enter?
Norine: This is the title track of my latest release and the blues feel is
accessible to almost everyone. Simple and easy to sing along with and
anyone can join in and usually does!

Hammer Records: If you could send a message to the judges, what would it be?
Norine: "You consider yourself a music lover and you believe in the pleasure of
beauty, you understand the complexity of life with it's both soothing
and exciting sounds. While you are drawn to all kinds of creative
expression you appreciate the timeless and the classic. You love music
that creates images and stirs deep feelings and takes you away on a
journey. This is the music that I lovingly make:  one note, one idea and
